[what if] Captain Harlock - Arcadia

cym0k

SOC-12
I stumbled across the new cgi Captain Harlock film that is coming out.

Link to the first 12 minutes.

As I am quite new to both Harlock and Traveller I thought: "wow! I need that ship!"

That of course involves deck plans and stats.

I have had a search with no luck, but I plan on continuing my search this evening. Would the Arcadia (or a close analogue) work for you? Personally I think it's quite awesome, if a little work...

Once more biting off more than I can chew!!

The Arcadia is Harlock's ship. Also, in the same universe, is Star Blazers SBB Yamamoto, and Pirate Captain Emeraldis.

Note that Harlock is sometimes transliterated as Herlock or Haarlock.

It's a fun universe, and there's a good bit of material for it.

I just got lost down a rabbit hole. LOTS of good stuff out there.

Slight problem with Arcadia, it's about 400 metres long and weighs approximately 215,000 tonnes.

Ouch.

With that mass, it's probably about 21,500 Displacement Tons. Not THAT big. But it is a Space Battleship.

According to Toei Animation, the new Arcadia (an SFA Deathshadow-class battleship) in this film is spec'd out as follows:

  • Length: 1072m (1172 yards) / Width: 312m (341 yards) / Height: 355m (388 yards)
  • Armament: 3 rows of 4 three-barreled dimensional particle oscillator turrets (main battery)
  • 4 three-barreled dimensional particle oscillator turrets (secondary battery)
  • 24 two-barreled anti-space fighter beam cannons
  • 8 anti-battleship torpedo tubes
  • Main engine: 2 dark matter energy engines

Holy Warhammer 40K!

I've been looking for a way to describe a 40K Rogue Trader for a long time... and that's fricking it! There must be some complimentary nods to this anime by the 40K people since Rogue Trader Haarlock is an icon in the Calixis Sector! Given that this character outdates Dark Heresy, it must be a kind of homage. Neat.

The Arcadia keeps growing.

Scaling from the old 1/1600 plastic model (called the "Deathshadow") gives:
Length / Beam / Draft: 286m / approx. 40m / approx. 70m

The "Arcadia of My Youth" version:
Length / Beam / Draft: 400m / 260m / 173m or similar

A kilometer long is a bit of a boost...

The bounding box for the old Deathshadow is 53,600Td bounding box, but the ship fills about 5/27 of that, for roughly 9925 Td, call it 10KTd for good measure.

The AomY version:
Bounding Box: 1,285,143 Td
But it fills only about 4/27 of the box, for 190,392Td. Call it 200KTd for good measure - a close fit with CT Bk5 Cruisers

The Movie version SFA Deathshadow
Bounding Box: 8,481,052 Td
Fills maybe as much as 3.5/27 of the bounding box, for 1,099,396Td - just a hair larger than the largest OTU battleships.

I have to say, I barely know the 40k universe at all. And I've not ever seen Rogue Trader or Dark Heresy other than what's on the web. But when I saw the first 12 minutes of this new movie, they were the first thing that jumped into my head. It's almost as if Space Pirate Captain Harlock inspired 40k which in turn inspired Harlock: Space Pirate. Now I'm facing my first desire to pick up those FFG books.

I just hope he's got more than 40-something crewmembers on Arcadia now!

Assuming that he is at least a full generation (and probably a lot more than that) after Yamato, the automation is probably extreme. Recall that he was able to reach either the Yamato or something a lot like it once more derelict on the sea bottom, wake it up, and get it flying without crew *by remote control*.

Just watched the link. Space axes!

He's NOT a full generation behind the Yamato. It happens that it was planned for the anime to show him meeting the Yamato en route back from Iscandar; The Yamato does appear in some of the Harlock comics set in the earlier portions of Harlock's career.

And Emeraldas and Harlock appear in each the others lines of comics as crossovers. Emeraldas and Harlock seem to be ex-lovers from some of the byplay in the circa 92 era comics...

Harlock is older than some of the younger SBB Yamato characters and significantly younger than the oldest ones. But note that Captain Okito IS fully a generation or more older than the crew - he spent time in cryogenic suspension.

They also all cross over with the Galaxy Express 999 series. Jointly, it's called the "Leijiverse," and despite the SBB Yamato originally being not Leiji's, it's part of it.

Further, not all appearances are in the same continuity....

Now that you mention it, there was talk back in to 80s that no two of his anime appearances were actually in the same continuity. Gundam wouldn't get that bad for another decade...
