What in the world is "commo"?

Yes, the officer is called a signals officer (actually, originally an age of sail term, still in use). The petty officer/enlisted man is sparks.
 
Maybe it's more of an Air Force inspired thing because I've been using it since the mid-80s. (Not that I'm Air Force, but I've worked with them a good bit). [shrug again] ;)
 
We never did back in the 1970s (when the game was written) or the 1980s (when I was in the USMC).

Perhaps it's a new "update" of the slang.

Regarding Comms vs Commo, I used "Commo" in the US Army (left in 1997) and only heard of "Comms" in SciFi.
