What SF artist or book cover artwork reminds you of Traveller?

Back in the TTA days, Foss was the one that grabbed me. Burns replaced him long ago, but inexplicably it's only recently that I recognised Elson's greatness.

Maybe it has something to do with exposure? I'm in the US, and while I'm familiar with McQuarrie, the other names don't ring a bell. Elson's works figured prominently in the old Terran Trade Authority books, and since so many of his paintings sparked my imagination, his was a name I latched on to.

I'm familiar with McCall only because of the paintings he did for NASA and the movie 2001. If the TTA books were in the kids/educational section of book stores, that would explain why I never knew of them. I was in the art section all the time.

Ahhhh... yeah, the TTA books were in the SF section, and I also remember seeing them in them bargain bin.

If I haven't mentioned him before, I'll mention him now. Another artist whose works found their way into the TTA books - Angus McKie.

Though honestly, you'll get better examples of his work if you do an image search on his name.

Maybe. I dunno. It's hard to say these days. Things have changed in the 30+ years between now and then. For instance, I saw a really cool book in the Space/Astronomy/Physics section of the bookstore a couple weeks ago. I would never have thought to look there, or even know that this bookstore had such a section, but I was wandering around waiting for the missus to finish up looking for something.

This is some:

I think Norman Rockwell painted an astronaut taking his physical. It's a heck of a lot closer to Traveller than any anime.

I found these:

Yes, but Japanimation isn't all about Big Eyes....Shirow (though he didn't do space) had some wonderful sci-fi stuff. Yeah, there was a some sexy women (hey...it sells), he had some amazing backgrounds, costuming, military stuff....truly amazing.

So, most of the time, his Appleseed characters looked like so: (They were survivors of the wastelands brought in to be police for the new 'shining city on the hill'.)

McCall had a book out a few years back, which I wanted to buy but didn't. In it he has some of his more speculative paintings--truly sci-fi art kind of stuff.

Yup. I love the Space Cities (around page 15), when I read the description of the floating Imperial Palace on Capital this was immediately came to mind. You should share these over at Mongoose where there is a thread on Inspirational Art for Traveller.

Hi,

I have to admit that as of late alot of my thoughts of future settings have been heavily influenced by anime and Manga like "Ghost in the Shell", "Appleseed", "Cowboy Bebop" and "Planetes". (Though I also really like the images from Mr. McCall posted above.)

Regards

Speaking of art, I love Bryan Gibson's Traveller artwork. I was going to use some examples he posted for his Terran Praesidum setting in a convention game I have coming up, but now I can't find any of the sites. Can anyone direct me?

To me Dietrick is the epitome of Traveller artists and artistry. I think he has a very healthy and delightful imagination that he's shared with us. Some of the stuff I really like is his Starter Traveller box cover art, and the box cover art for a little known game called "Trailblazer".

Back to McCall; here's his official website; http://www.mccallstudios.com/bio.html

Terran Trade Authority Handbooks/Artists Resource

Hi,
I thought the readers of this thread might like to take a look at my website, which is based on the TTA books background and has information about the books in the series. The other Stewart Cowley books 'Galactic Encounters' are also listed. I've also researched a number of other titles including books published by the 'Young Artists' involved in the TTA books, such as Peter Elson (IMHO my favourite sci-fi artist) and Colin Hay.

I only mention my site here as it may be useful to others looking to obtain copies of these brilliant out-of-print books.

Digital Waterfalls can be found at http://www.digitalwaterfalls.co.uk/

Cheers everyone!
