General What ship should I design for 3d printing?

Topaz172

SOC-11
I am an artist and technical illustrator using Autocad fusion software. This means that I can generate ship models that can be 3d printed.

I have currently created two scout type's, the Lab-ship and the Animal Class Safari Ship as 3d Printed models. (each one roughly 200mm long)

I'm looking for a recommendation for a cool ship as the next one to add to my fleet.

For now I'm looking at maybe the X-boat or the Broadsword... but can you guys think of a design that I should do first?

(I'm avoiding the A2-Trader as others have done it justice).

Below is a photoshop created from two of the models

I would pretty much sell a kidney, or run over my mother, for a nice version of the classic "Dragon" system defense boat. Just an idea!

Dragon Class SDB and Gazelle Class Close Escort would be cool, as well as the Type-T Patrol Corvette.

The 2000 ton Sydkai Class Colonial Cruiser might be interesting as well.

For a Big Ship, maybe a 50,000 ton Ghalalk Class Cruiser.

I second the Type T Patrol Cruiser. While you are doing your best Han Solo imitation, here come the local cops. Let's see if these space combat rules are playable.
Then the pirates' ship (maybe a Broadsword) who mess with you to improve THEIR reputation.
Later, something like an Imperial Navy escort - Chrysanthemum class tickles my memory as being 1000 tons of 'designed to drop the hammer on the pirates' plus is a complex form that will give your printer a workout.
Some 10-ton fighters whose visual design owes nothing to anybody else's famous IP.
50-ton Modular Cutter that moves cargo pods from orbit to surface.

And conveniently, a storyline to justify why to buy your next model.

Also think about looking for any threads or polls on this site about "What is your favorite Traveller spaceship?" This might indicate marketability. As long as the answer is not "a 1M dton battlerider transport", you should be OK...

Did I mention I have a few used air-rafts of my own design?

A frieight raft, a flatbed raft, canvas-top cargo raft, fuel raft

Also a very nice 'smart-raft' runabout for the city driver...?

I've bought a few Traveller-sanctioned minis from Shapeways. I would not mind buying some more if you could get an agreement going with the powers that be. 25mm scale air rafts would be really nice (I have an old 15mm Martian Metals one still, but I've been using 25mm scale since I started getting way too many deck plan posters and minis (I have a really bad Kickstarter and Traveller addiction :) )

And space ships of any scale are always nice :)

Getting official sanction would be optimal... not sure who to approach though.

currently my air rafts are 15mm scale... which is easy to upscale.

Optimal, but not necessarily required.

The designs are not trademarked (as far as I know).

i.e. you can't copy, say, the Sup. 7 plans for a "Scout Ship", but you can draw your OWN plans of a "Scout Ship".

As for a ship, I'd like to see a free trader.

Ah but if I use the word 'Traveller' its implied. I've read the fair use and its framed around 'the art' and the copyright of the original artist and that it varies depending on the contract in use at the time.
It is unclear what the status is of anything '3d' as it almost certainly wasn't contemplated when those contracts were written and (unless I missed it) isn't explicitly mentioned. so its a muddy grey area.

certainly 'in detail' what I have done isn't a clone copy.

To be clear.. getting a profit isn't my motivation. Having fun designing and sharing fun is.

modular ships, as I know tem from GURP and T5

You make the "frame" and then all the cool pods or lighters or SDB riders you could think of. Some epoxy for permanent fits or a bit of blue tack for "load of the day" and you may have the most extravagant structure you wishes.

All of a sudden I think of a space station (pile "cart wheel" atop "cart wheel" with some spacer between them and rimless wheel with extended spoke as docking pylon every 3 to 5 "wheel").

have fun
