What YOU like about Mongoose Traveller!

Unlike many others, I have the first edition of MGT:TMB.

And I like the art!

Neat! It ain't my cup of tea, but hey, getting the art right for a novel or a game is darn near impossible since you're never going to match what's in people's heads.

Looking at the art from an entirely different perspective, if one of my students were producing the same stuff I'd be pushing them to get out and sell it. (Though I'd also be making some stylistic comments to try and help them broaden their potential market.)

Regardless, I'm sure the artist was given too little time, difficult guidelines, and was paid too little in the end. Such is the nature of commercial art. :)

Well, I should say that I liked most of what's in the TMB, but I especially liked the ship design. Now, I wish they'd kept the ship computers going the way they did in the TMB instead of just haring off and adding "Core" computers in MGT:HG - I'd rather they expanded the computers to rating 9 and then added a Core-Computer Option, and I'd much rather that they expanded the TMB version of shipbuilding out to 9,500 tons or so and limited capital ships to 10,000 tons ... but that's another thread. MGT:TMB had some very good equipment (although the tech scale is very far off, e.g. bioscanners), and I like how they put in cyberware.

I still haven't done more than a cursory look through the main book. What I did read was interesting & close to CT that I will add some of it to my CT campaign. I do like the trade rules. CharGen was fun, & not as bad as I thought it would. Rolled a character up through the system last weekend at a Nuke-Con Gameday. However, since I was running a game, I couldn't play the character. I did like the connections & allies, etal., that made for some interesting background.

I think I'll post in this thread - the 'I don't like Mongoose Traveller' thread is quite heated.

I'm a GURPS gamer and proudly have and love all the GT books and I've said this more times than I care too:

1) I really like Mongoose Traveller, it has sold very well and has lots of additional material to make the game easy and fun to play.

2) I asked a group of Traveller players which rules they liked the best for playing Traveller and they said Mongoose Traveller.

3) Like any good set of rules, Mongoose Traveller is supposed to have a 10 year run before something new comes along - plenty of time to get your money's worth from this fabulous product.

4) Finally, I actually like the inclusion of Babylon 5 and other backgrounds for use with Traveller. Its about time this happened.

Question resolved in a new topic.

... these are not the droids we're looking for, move along.

Not trolling for conflict, but I hear "Mongoose Traveller is selling very well" quoted quite a bit. Does anyone have actual figures and a basis of comparison (like 'over 10,000 copis sold' or 'outselling DnD whatever edition', or is this all personal opinion based upon your local store?

I was just wondering.

I started a new thread for this topic.
