Ease up guys. Jeeze Louise, the new member's first post and instead of ignoring it or playing along you jump on their back? Somebody preempt your favorite TV tonight with breaking news? :)

At least Mark Morgan is willing to be welcoming and post on topic.

I don't have a favorite from that list myself, heck I've watched and enjoyed them all even if I tend to think of it all as Star Dreck ;)

But in any case...

...welcome aboard Sopranosbaby :D

The other Traveller's are usually nicer to new passengers :)

Ah, silly me, it's the bad links that look like advertising that you noticed and I missed isn't it. Yeah, that's a major no-no here. First glance I didn't even mouse them, just figured they were links to some fan site or such. My apologies Rhialto and S4 if I am wrong and you've got it right. Of course the proper procedure is to report the post, not set fire to it.

Classic, for me. Then Animated. Then DS9.

BTW, the spam links in the OP's post have been removed, and the OP banned for spamming.

This depends on if you mean which show had the best stand out episodes or which show was consistantly good. Some of my most favorite episodes were Next Gen, but overall I'd say DS9, followed by the films.

Not counting the films, I'd have to put the order:
Deep Space Nine
Enterprise
Voyager
Next Generation
Classic

I thought the classic trek series exceedingly silly when I caught the repeats as a child.
The Next Generation had a few strong episodes (usually the two parters - the Borg, Unification, the Klingon Civil War), but was generally weak.
DS9 started putting in story arcs (probably to compete with Babylon 5 which had a strong story) and was generally better. It still didn't draw me as much as Babylon 5 or the new Battlestar Galactica.
Voyager and Enterprise again used story arcs in the background to the episodes. The quality is okay (watchable if nothing else is on).

Just noticed on news items ... Majel Barrett has died (18th December)

Ditto.
Beyond that... hmmm... NextGen... then the DS9 Tribbles episode... then the alternate universe episode of Ent.

I had a hard time watching NextGen beyond it's next to last year. I tried watching the rest, but was never able to get into any of them.

I'm really enjoying the remastered hi-def classic Trek. Some of the special effects look really great. The scene of the Constellation's battered saucer getting hit by debris from a crushed planet comes to mind.

I love Classic Trek.

TNG found a place in my heart (although not as strong as Classic).

DS9 became awesome starting with the third season.

Voyager sucked.

Enterprise had a lot of promise but ultimately sucked as well.

As for the movies:

The Wrath of Khan is still one of the best movies of any genre ever made.

The Motion Picture turns from boring to interesting, in a novel-like-way, after about the 52nd viewing.

The Search For Spock could have been a great film, but it needed a third act. Another 30 min when the Klingons show back up.

I'm not as crazy about The Undiscovered Country as some are. But, it's a cool title.

The Voyage Home fills the spot of a distant second place for Best Trek Film ever made (behind TWoK).

The Final Frontier had a neat idea and a cool title, but ended up as a forgettable TV episode.

None of the TNG movies stand out for me. I liked the TNG series much better. All TNG films feel like TV episodes.

And, this new one? Star Trek? Well, we'll just have to wait and see about six months.

TV is TV. There are sometimes jewels, but most episodes of any TV series are formulaic crap.

TOS (put properly) had a few excellent episodes: City on the Edge of Forever, Where No Man Has Gone Before, Balance of Terror, A Private Little War.

My problem with TNG were all the the side-plots. That's simply too much for a 1-hour show. Nothing was ever developed enough to be good.

The remainder were just deriative.

For the Movies, I only liked (in order) II, III, VI, IV. The first one was the worst, and deriative to boot. Just an overly long version of TOS episode The Changeling.

Read the books that take place after that movie, I think you will like all that happens then.

Same with the The Undiscovered Country . I do not know about all the TNG books after this but the ones that focus on the Classic characters are good. IMO

Why? Why do people like the Classic Trek?
It's cheesy, badly acted, has poor storylines, and there's no character development.
Why do people like it?
This I will never understand.
It was the first. People always love the first of anything.
It did things that were unheard of during a time that was uncertain in the world.
It was cleaner like reading a book versus just letting the movie and modern day TV people tell you everything. ie you could dream about how you would design it differently.
There is something about the imgination that takes off with just a bit of promting instead of telling you everything.

Comparatively speaking, on the Movies, you are correct (IMO) but if we did not get the first one there would have never anyother StarTrek developed. Sure the fans were screaming for more before the movies but the studio was in a mind set of 'well, we give Gene one more shot. We owe it to him and then if it fails we can say we tried.' Surprise, it over achieved and made world entertainment industry realize that there was a larger market that was ready for large scale production movies besides Star Wars.

Just my opinion. :)

Got some titles? I've been starting to collect some Trek books to read. I'm focussing on "Classic" story lines, before TMP, but I've seen reviews of Ex Machina, which takes place immediately after TMP. I want that one.

And, I love the Vangaurd series. That's great Classic Trek with somewhat new characters!

One of the best books I've ever read (above and beyond Star Trek) is The Final Reflection by gaming's own John M. Ford. That's a masterful piece of science fiction...and it just happens to be a Trek book.

So, if you've got some recommendations, I'd like to hear 'em.
