Which version do you prefer and why?

Yup.
I run MGT, but the supplements really stink as a whole.

WOW. I feel like the other side of the coin. For me, I found that MGT kind of created a slightly different universe to canon Traveller. Personally I've found the supplement to be superb and havn't bothered with much of the rest. (Take Supplement 3: Fighting Ships for example. 35+ pages of deck plans for the Tigress for example. Simply stunning and very welcome. Also it has 'The Plankwell' deck plans. A rather large couple of undertakings there. I also love the other supplements(in particular the other starship books again for there deck plans). A couple of the adventures are terrific as well.

For myself, I started with the original CT black books that a friend lent me. I really enjoyed them but alas most people in my local area where AD&D freaks(to this day I hate that game because I really wanted to game in space and there was everyone killing off monsters by the score instead... BORING). Years later I purchased the TNE rule book, again experiencing the same issues as when I'd borrowed classic. So I sold that. Then it was without doubt Chris Foss(one of my favourite artists of all time) who painted fantastic artwork all over T4 and I purchased a fair amount of those books and held on to them.

So T4 was my preferred system, mainly because it's a touch different and removes all the rule crunching talk that pops up with other versions.

However, now T5 is upon us, I'll be using that predominantly now. I'm looking forward to the new wave of T5 material to come too.

All that said, once I got the MegaTraveller books, I was really impressed with the material and especially love the Digest Group Publications with my favourite Traveller resource so far being 'The Starship Operators Manual', really well written and worth every cent if you can find a copy.

Don't fear checking out the other systems. There all Traveller in the end and if your happy with CT, just use CT rules with those games, no ones got the laser as they say.

I missed that one, but just the title makes me salivate, if the content lives up to it. I am very happy to have a DGB World Builder's Handbook.

Am I understanding correctly that these are now hard to find, or expensive if found?

I wonder why Marc does not have a CD-ROM of these on FFE, when he has most other third-party stuff?

Absolutely, you will love it. Alas as mentioned above, it's essentially a Mexican standoff, which is a shame as it's great material. I'd be there to support it. I even offered to do up a CDROM if/when I can complete the collection of DGP books, however it was flamed and due to that silly copyright issue it prevents me from doing so. It's now a case of ebaying and checking out the finer book stores(do be ready for a high price tag as there rare, but every now and then you can find a bargain).

Wow, another T4 fan. Thought I was the only one!

No way, T4 was great. Sure it had it's share of fixes but overall it was a nicely contained Traveller. My only gripe was the Starships book, which was one of the poorest aspects of the whole line. The Anomolies book also seemed to be rehashes of the BITS publications adventures repackaged.

IIRC, Roger Sanger, who bought the DGP rights from Joe Fugate*, can't republish DGP material without a license from Marc and Marc can't republish DGP stuff without an arrangement with Mr. Sanger.

Sounds ideal for a joint venture that would let them both profit, rather than only speculators getting the profit and neither of the IP owners getting anything. Maybe we need a Vargr Emissary w high Liaison skill to mediate between them.

Hi,

With respect to the Starship Operator's Manual I actually have kind of split feelings on it. When I first picked up a copy of it many years ago I was really amazed by all the info and detail in it. But since then I've come to feel that in some ways it has become the source of a number of contradictions with other canon, and it still really bugs me just how far off the deck plans are from canon information.

PS. It also bugs me a little that the image of the 'old Salt' they used in the book was just a thinly revised image of Adm McCain from WWII.

What bugged me with T4 were all the Foss prints from the '70s. I don't even like Foss. Never did when his paintings were first released.

First Survey was pretty bad. It must all have been spat out of a computer without very much further thought, because the UWP for Vland had a Pop of 3. Unless there was some genocidal catastrophe during the Long Night... (interpreting dodgy UWPs is an essential skill)

But there was plenty of great stuff - Aliens Archive, First Survey, Milieu Zero, the equipment books (apart from Starships). The BITS-enhanced starship design sequence is yet to be topped in my opinion (I haven't yet seen T5).

Mongoose Traveller uses a lot of ideas/rules that were presented in Traveller 4. So in a way, Traveller 4 was a refined Classic Traveller in some parts, if not just an update for the '90s.

I have for years been a Megatraveller fan but since i now have T5 that has changed so T5 is the system for me, but the rebellion era is my favourite setting, although i'm currently running my game from 1107 and hoping to go through to the rebellion.
