Darrians module astrography

Hmm that's one I hadn't thought of jrients, and could explain the quick change of official policy of the Domain.

My own old idea, from somewhere, my own or some other brain, I used the idea that Darrian's were natually non-psionic. Not only can a Darrian never have psionics they are also entirely immune to them.

Either just unaffected personally (like a full body psi-helm) or actively damping out to a small range, increasing with the density of Darrians in any area. I don't recall which. I'm sure it's not canon (well pretty sure) but it would explain why the Zho would not be happy with them and why the Darrian's would be equally unhappy.

Just to be clear, it is not that the Zhodani are unhappy with the Darrians. It is that they are afraid of the Darrians. They saw that the Darrians nearly killed themselves off by destabilizing their star. (It is quite likely the after effect of the destabilization that cause the Zhodani to notice the Darrians in the first place.) This fear is what led the Zhodani to keep their distance from the Darrians until after they had recovered spaceflight. (This fear is also what probably helped with the development of the Star Trigger.)

So, as a result of being spied on, but not helped, by the Zhodani is why the Darrians do not like them. The not helping thing is very important to the Darrians. Remember, the Darrians even offered to help the Sword Worlds rebuild ater a particularly violent civil war. (The Sword Worlds refused the offer.)

Until the discovery of the Zhodani actions, the Darrians and Zhodani were well on the way to the same type of relationship the Darrians eventually enjoyed with the Imperium. This leads to a neat little irony: the Zhodani fear lead to the development of a thorn in their side. Had the Zhodani ignored their fear and helped the Darrians, they would have likely gained a very helpful, very loyal client state.

As for the Darrians psionic potential, I would have to go with Jeff. The Darrians have never been described as non-psionic, therefore they most likely follow the human norm. Also, they build their own psionic shield helmets, which they would not need to do if they were non-psionic. (The Darrian shields are concealable, unlike the clunky Imperial models.) For what it is worth, the Darrian writeup in GT:Humaniti basically follows Jeff's interpretation.

The other irony is that the Imperium fears psionics and is at war with an empire built around it, but is allies with a state that tolerates psionics.

When looked at from that perspective, it sheds light on the REAL reason the Zhodani were disliked - the territory. Psionics just became a convienient lablel.

Well, the Imperium's fear of psionics is not as complete as we were lead to believe. Read GT: Psionic Institutes, psionics merely provides the Imperium with the creation of the Other that can keep their populations in line.

Psionics gives the Solomani members of the Imperium a reason for loyality and unites the Vilani behind a Solomani Cause. Those Syleans are also pretty sneaky just masking fear with a propaganda campaign...

As for the minor races and Pocket Empires within Imperial Space, the Imperium can always use its policy of non-interference for allies and Peacemaking for those that turn against it. The Imperium is merely following the classic Realpolitik game. I wonder if the other smaller Pocket Empires in the Marches have ever persued a Corepolitik (imitating Brandt's Ostpolitik)?
