Ok, keep your fingers off the "move post" buttons, this is a traveller related post.
There is a discussion re release of the (hopefully) improved Bladerunner DVD and it made me think of this:
What would the stats for Deckard's gun be in traveller?
It's a projectile weapon, so it might fit in traveller fairly well. There are some inconsistencies in the movie that make it a little hard to stat, tho, so let's discuss it and see if we can make a traveller version of the rep-dropper.
First off, the "mystery" of the red lights under the barrel doesn't seem like much of a mystery to me, it was obviously a locater system to make it easy for the police to find one of those cannons if it was lost/stolen. Why do I say this with certainty? Deckard dropped his gun and didn't go back ti find it, but Gav contemptuously tossed it to him later. Obviously gav had something that made it easy to find the gun in the dark messy interior of the bradbury building, a lojack for guns if you will.
Now the gun did not eject shell casings, making me thing it was a caseless job, likely some sort of gyrojet with the bugs worked out, but it may have been a "normal" caseless job too, that's really not too critical a point, altho if it were a gyrojet it might be relatively recoiless, making it more useful in low G, and they had space travel in bladerunner.
The main issue I have is the fact that at one time the gun was clearly shown as firing an explosive round, as in when deckard fired at batty and missed, resulting in a very visible explosion where the round impacted the wall.
But when the rounds struck people (counting replicants as people) there was no visible explosion. (Well, asides from bursts of blood and brain.) I'm thinking the explosive was fuzed in such a manner that it would bury itself in a target's body then detonate for maximum damage.
Given how tough replicants were, I'd say it was safe to assume guns issued to people hunting them would be fairly powerful. Even a "pleasure model" replicant was more than capable of beating a tough human in hand to hand.
So I think the guns were caseless or gyrojet high calibur rounds with explosive heads and a detonator system that would detonate the shell after sudden deceleration, which would place them inside an unarmored target when they blew.
In gurps terms, I'm make them have a 2d6 regular damage, with a followup 1d6+2 explosion, however if the round's initial 2d6 damage penetrated target DR and does any HP damage to the target, the charge is assumed to be inside the target when it detonates, resulting in the damage to the target being multiplied by 5, in addition to and multiplies for hit location.
Also if the shell detonated inside a target, the target absorbs the blast, resulting in no explosive damage to nearby targets, explosive damage would apply if the shell detonated against a wall or something similar.
In general, to model a bladerunner gun in traveller, you need something high caliber with an explosive effect that is pretty much meant to drop or at least incapacitate something at least slightly tougher than a human in one hit.
Guns like them might be popular in traveller, especially on the k'kree and aslan borders....
If anyone wants to comment on my GT design, or add in a design for their traveller system, that's what the thread is here for.
