It's a sensible idea if CotI falls, and I agree that this (along with general interest) is the main context in which I've seen other sites mentioned. The problem with prophecies of doom, though, is that they can be self-fulfilling.

Whilst I feel that Hunter could make significant improvements to goodwill just with an occasional update, and by appointing a reliable deputy during his 'absences', as I just mentioned on another thread, now that it seems CotI has had its lease renewed it's up to us to make it the place to be.

Note that, under the T&C of these boards, posters here are not allowed to mention any other boards (of any kind, anywhere) in a post with a view to obtaining members. Doing so will result in an infraction being issued.
I've seen that before, and that's ⌧ed-up. I believe in a free market of forums, if a forum has enough inspiration and information it need not fear competition, if it's dull and empty it's doomed anyway.

And Hunter doesn't want you using his forum to advance your own. You play in his sandbox, you play by his rules. So, whether you believe in it or not, while here, you need to play by the rules here.

And many other boards I've been on have similar rules, for liability reasons if nothing else. By not allowing endorsements of other boards, one can't be held liable for the content of those boards. Also, it gives reason to label a lot of spam real fast as spam.

And if hunter wants to act like that he may find fewer and fewer people in his sandbox...

Okay so write the best selling game.

Put up a forums.

Beat out Traveller 5, Mongoose Traveller, and everyone else. People will beat a path to your door. Or pay for advertising.

Good luck.

Being a good game writer doesn't give anyone a right to act like a dictator and be unreasonable, especially when they ignore serious, legitimate business questions for months, then pop in to whine in a PM at someone over a non issue like this.

I never said Hunter was a good game writer. I don't like nor play t20, and he knows that, as I've said it a few times around here.

I also think the service / support on GRiP Traveller was pretty poor.

That doesn't detract from the fact that this is his site, to run how he likes.

If he wants to up and ban everyone, including me, for cause or not, he's more than free to do so.

How he runs his business is a separate issue from the forums, I think.

YMMV, of course, (and it seems to.)

Write your game, and enjoy. If it's good enough, well marketed, and advertised others will enjoy it also.

I suggest people go and read the Forum Rules:

http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/faq.php?faq=cotirules#faq_therules

Especially Rule 6:

6) Do not undertake any action to the detriment of the community (this is vague to there can be no loopholes). The list of forbidden actions includes, but is not limited to:
  • Trying to pull fans away from here to other forums.
  • Trashing other forums, games, companies, or their products.
  • Attempting to solicit personal information.
  • Encouraging breaking board rules.
  • Arguing with Moderators or Administrators about these rules.

I don't consider these to be unreasonable or unusual.
Any further violations will be punished.

Whoops, I hadn't seen this thread...

To return to the topic...

I think it'd be great to have an "Other SFRPGs" subforum. This board has the critical mass (numbers of posters and assembled expertise) to make it a success. It would benefit Traveller discussions as well. Comparing one thing to other things helps you better understand what that one thing is all about, relative to the others.

"Trashing other companies, games, etc." (not an exact quote)

Does this include Mongoose Publishing and their version of Traveller?

Allen

A couple of posters have pushed the line. Several have been infracted over trashing...

The few times the other mods have disagreed with my calls, they've let me know.

I second this thought and would like to add that we've seen people here adapt Traveller to fantasy and piracy on 21st century Earth based applications, so there's no reason that cross pollination with other games should be ruled out.

Especially Rule 6:

ARGH! I swear some people here must have neutronium plated skulls!

Rule 6 states people should not try to pull users here away to other boards. Now, to put it in simple terms that, maybe, even a mod can understand, this board is dedicated to traveller only.

OK, now people who are into traveller might, in all probability, enjoy OTHER rpg's, especially other SFRPG's.

This board is dedicated to traveller and discussing other games, even other SFRPGs, is not allowed here. People come here to discuss traveller, however that does not mean they might not also enjoy discussing other SFRPGs, but they can't do that here.

So, there's another board set up by people who like traveller that allows people to discuss other sfrpgs. This does not in any way "pull members" away from this board, it just lets them have a place to go to discuss other games they enjoy.

In sum, it's a benefit to the board members and does not hurt this place in any way. In fact there are other things on this board that seems to be costing it users that are in no way related to mentioning other forums. If the admins and mods are sooooo concerned about losing users maybe they need to address those issues and not act like dictators, which in and of itself can drive off users at jump 6 speed.

As to punishing people for infractions, hey if you want to act like little billy badass, the terror of the playground and bully people, fine. See how many users you have then. I like this place but if it's going to be ran like that I don't need it. And I think the time and effort I spend trying to bring in good topics proves I like this place and want it to prosper, but not if it's going to become anything like some forums which are ran by pompous dicks.

BTW, over on sfrpg.org.uk I put up a link to a site that allows discussion of ALL rpgs. not just SF, as a service to people who like sfrpgs and other ones. It's amazing how there was no fuss, no whining, no threats, just a general ""Looks like a nice site, people can discuss fantasy and other games there if they want."

People here could learn from that site.

And lastly, someone said there were "liability" issues with linking to another site. That was the inane, asinine and downright laughable bunch of pure BS I've ever heard outside of a political commercial! "Liability"? For linking to a non ⌧ site? Gimme a break, that's so stupid it hurts my brain....:oo: Only a lawyer could say something like that.

If this place wants to keep members, try respecting them a bit more and not being petty. Also if someone could reply to legitimate business questions and not ignore people for months, then sneak in just to whine and threaten people who do something that hurts no one it would help this site a lot as several former useful, productive members have quit over issues like that.

That would help this place and keep members here, and I hope it's considered as I really don't want to see this place tank and am trying to convince people to act in ways that will prevent same.

Given that I, with Hunter, wrote the rules, I can assure the rest of you, trent is wrong.
