Well, as Trent had only joined the boards about three months ago, I know I'm not sweating the disembarkation from the board.

Hey does anybody remember that CyberStalking Scheme some folks from the Avenger board ran a while back targeting someone on another board that MJD had a disagreement with? Well, when I see posts from MARC W. Fraking MILLER thanking Hunter and others for their contributions, I have to ask if someone's trying to piss in Hunter's Cheerios and upset this board on purpose. I do know that if I find out something like that other CyberStalking Scheme happens here (where I PAY to be a member), I'll be sending every post I can find relating to it up to the FBIs Cyber Department in Chicago. 'Nuff said.

The problem to me seems that people airing their dirty laundry are causing a ruckus. You got a problem with Hunter? Take it up with Hunter. You got a problem with a specific Moderator? Take it up with that Moderator or one of the others. I personally don't want to read about it. That being said, everyone's entitled to their opinion. And I've heard that opinions are like @$$holes - everyone has one and everyone thinks the other person's stinks.

Except that we need to be encouraging newcomers, not creating a clique, and Trent is the fourth dissatisfied public 'disembarkation' in as many weeks. What's going on here, guys? What's happening to our board? Trent has come in as an eager newcomer from another board, looked around and decided he doesn't like what he sees. Is that good?

From his POV, he's suggested a few 'freedoms' that he's experienced elsewhere, and gotten himself sent to Siberia for dissidence.

If the Citizens here need a 'wall' to prevent them from defecting, what does that say about our leadership and lifestyle?

And here's the important part: it's highly unlikely that I am the only one to think that.

Several others decided that, since it was less fun for them, they would violate the rules. They got banned for repeated infractions. Some temp, some permanent. (I've only given perma bans when asked by the user or when first post is spam.)

As for trent: it is less what his message was, and far more how he delivered it. Open hostility and actively encouraging others to break the rules is NOT a right, not a privilege, and not tolerated. I didn't realize when I hit the infraction button he'd be banned... But I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Between the general lack of response to any threads outside "Mongoose SUXXORZ!", people threadcrapping on enthusiastic discussions of games - and we're not allowed to call them on it - and this sort of nonsense...

Make that a fifth, I reckon.

... but there again as I've only been on the Boards for two years although a Trav player for 30 - of course I may not count as a real person.

Seems to me the moderation is more than fair here.

If someone screws up, I say, Ban 'em. That's how I've run my own forums since 2005.

Obvious answer: Depends.

Reasond critique, no.

Critique using nasty sarcasm by someone who at that time had not even read the thing he was critiquing is not reasoned.

I don't think anyone subscribes to Trent's allegations, which are wacky in part and needlessly belligerent in tone.

I do think that some, perhaps many, people don't care for a board climate in which, after months of absence, the owner returns only to surreptitiously ban people left and right--and not just the odd transient freak but MJD--without either warning or public explanation. That is just bizarre.

On a related note, I can't count the number of "revenge boards" I've seen set up by disgruntled members of this or that internet forum in the past ten years. 9 out of 10 of these fold after a few weeks for lack of purpose. You don't build a community on disgruntlement. That said, 9 out of 10 times the owners of the original boards didn't go out of their way to provide a justifcation for these boards through their own actions.

We've been trying to contact Hunter for some time. A few days ago, we succeeded. His first actions were to fix some forum bugs, start dealing with missing orders, and ban two users, Roger (who specifically asked for it), and MJD (who was becoming a PITA).

Complaining about not being paid money legally owed is being a PITA eh...

Unfortunate...especially since the best things written for T20 were by him.

It is sad that things have gotten to this point.

We only ever heard his side of the story. The fact that he is a respected Traveller writer is the only reason I didn't ban him myself long ago.

As for Hunter not paying, I can only speak for my own experience: I've worked for him twice, he paid me both times.
