Errata - that difficult subject

WBH Errata (maybe)

Pg 49: (numbered deck plans)

25. Computer : The Model/5 computer is supported by extensive data banks, accounting for its larger than normal size. About two trillion words of data are stored online."

About that "two trillion words", I would hope in the 57th century the computer would the capability of holding more data than my iTunes Library.
 
...but they're really long words, and in big fancy 3D animated fonts with audio and video files attached! Every word is an extended length symphonic movie in every language and dialect of charted space.

Any idea how much two trillion words of storage looked like in the 80's? Yeah, some comp tech didn't age well.

Actually while typing that I had a bit of a typo that might fix that bit of errata. Maybe it should read "two trillion worlds of data... " :)

O yeah, I remember. I had a 386DX 20 4 megs of rams and a 40MB hard drive & had no idea how I could fill that up.

That is what I thought at first, but there are less than 11,000 worlds in the 3I.

I think the best idea is to simply delete the sentence.

No. It's doesn't make sense. We know it now. But it doesn't have to. Jump drives don't make sense but they are how we get from world to world. It's not errata. It's just that the authors imagination was out stripped by reality -- science fiction has become science fact. Remember, it's just a game. Maybe someday I will be proven wrong and and we will be jumping from world to world.

OK, let's look at the math.

Assumption: one word = 10 bytes (10 letters)

two trillion words = 20,000,000,000,000 bytes
= 1,953,1250,000 kilobytes (note, I'm dividing by 1024 as the computer works)
= 19,073,486 megabytes
= 18,626 gigabytes
= 18.2 terabytes

So, the $500 computer I'm working on right now has 2 Gb of memory and 225 Gb of hard drive storage. My $3,000 computer from 15 years ago had 2 Mb of memory and an 80 Mb hard drive. So it might be about ten years until I have an affordable computer with 2 terrabytes of memory and a 1,000 terabyte hard drive. But it's coming.

It's not errata. In the 57th century, the term "word" means something else. When we get there, you can tell me what the value is.

Referee's Companion Errata

The acronym for DP in the charts on pg 16 & 17 is never defined. Recommend changing DP to Damage Points.

Pg 16 - Small Conglomerate Unit Example
Independent Unit #4 is missing Grav Belt.

Pg 17 - Convert Back
Independent Unit #4 is still missing Grav Belt.

Final Conglomerate Unit has 24 Damage Points, not 20. (16 x 3 [players still conscious]) divided by 2 = 24.

Pg 28 Technology Chart 1:
TL 9 "Model/3" is missing from the Computers/Robotics Table.

Pg 29 Technology Chart 2:
TL 10 "Advanced Grav Modules" under Air Transportation - Should this be "Advanced Grav Vehicles"?
TL 11 "HV Grav Modules" - We already have Ultra Heavy Grav Modules at TL 10. Should this be Heavy Grav Vehicles?

TL 16 - Move "Fusion Output 7Kw per Liter" from Space Transportation Column to the Energy Column.
TL 17 - Move "Primitive Antimatter Plants" from the Space Transportation Column to the Energy Column.
TL 18 - Move "Self-Aware Starships" from Air Transportation Column to the Space Transportation Column.
TL 18 - Move "Antimatter 1Mw/Liter" from Air Transportation Column to the Energy Column.

Yeah, it means 'word and associated encyclopaedia entry for that word'
So it can hold trillions of full encyclopaedia entries

yeah, the angeltowns link should be dead (it was for some time).

Version 2.19 has been posted on my website. Marc is working on the revised MT CD-ROM, so this could be the version that winds up on there.
 
He could make some money if an MT CD was done with digital rather than image
PDFs. Then, people could update their "books".

That is what I did with mine. I have retypeset 3 of the books (Referee's Manual, Referee's Companion & Player's Manual) so far.

It only took me 10 minutes to update my Referee's manual with the 2.19 errata.
