I still do not understand why the Solomani are considered an alien race.

The Darrians, the Zhodani, and the Vilani are all derived from Terran Human stock, i.e. the Solomani.

If you use the word alien to mean not of the Imperium then it is correct.

I thought that Terra had been conquered by the Imperium, and was therefore a part of it. If this is the distinction, then the Sword Worlders would be aliens as well, as they are not part of the Imperium.

That would also mean that a Solomani from a planet in the Solomani sphere under Imperium control would not be an alien, but would be viewed as an alien as soon as he traveled outside of the area of Imperium control.

It was, but the bulk of the Solomani Sphere was not. The population of the Solomani Sphere are 'alien' to the Imperium, and yes the Sword Worlds are 'alien' to the Imperium too - we just didn't get an alien module for them until GURPS (or you could pick up the MgT version, but the GURPS one is far superior IMHO)

All of the CT alien modules detailed 'aliens' ie cultures not of the Imperium - the word alien can mean non-native (legal alien, illegal alien)
The obvious ones are the non human polities, Vargr, K'kree, Aslan, Hiver, and Droyne but the human based alien empires ie non-Imperial empires include the Solomani, the Zhodani and the Darrians.

That would also mean that a Solomani from a planet in the Solomani sphere under Imperium control would not be an alien, but would be viewed as an alien as soon as he traveled outside of the area of Imperium control.

A Solomani from Terra is an Imperial citizen, a Solomani from the Solomani Confederation is an alien, requiring visas, passports etc.

It's much like I am a UK citizen, when I visit the USA I am an alien.

I voted Aslan. I like the clear "hooks" in AM1: Aslan which make playing Aslan, both as PCs and NPCs, interesting and fun. "Samurai Cats" FTW!

The Vargr take the lead!

That actually surprises me. I like the Vargr. I mean, who doesn't like a humanoid wolf dressed in a marching band uniform?

But, I always thought of the Vargr as the least interesting--the least creative--of the main Traveller aliens.

They're both easier to play well and most able to function in human society without many special rules.

Vargr and Aslan are two of the very few things that turned me off to Traveller when I first came to it. I remember thinking, "C'mon, really? Space doggies and space cats?"

I've grown to embrace both. Droyne, Hiver, K'kree always seemed a lot more interesting to me.

The barrier to entry into those is much higher. A player can have Vargr explained and play them well enough due to the mechanical elements.

Same for Solomani. Racist bigots with a one party dictatorship masquerading as a democracy. And pre-1950's parallels are self-evident to anyone who paid attention in World History.

The MT vilani are harder than the Solomani - committees for everything, everyone is a specialist in something, consensus trumps individual brilliance. It's not harder to explain, but it a lot harder to actually play.

Everything else is harder to play as intended. Hivers are actually easier than Darrians, Zhodani, or Aslan.

K'Kree are flat out the hardest. You can probably guess why I think so. They're compelling as NPCs and villains, but in addition to being racially psychotic, they're responses to danger are alien to humans. And then there's the simple hassle of playing 5 to 30 characters. Per player. It's brilliant as a work of fiction, passable as a set of rules, but lousy as PCs.

The minor species available as PCs in CT — Ael Yael, Virushi, Newts, Shriekers, and Dolphins — are (except for shriekers) presented as simple mods and a couple pages. Short enough players actually read them. And simple enough changes to be able to PLAY them.

Hivers

I love Hivers, though insanely difficult to play as a PC. But I love "wheels within wheels" plots. As in "Dune" and GOT weren't complicated enough.
