I just got it!

...and it rocks. Seriously. Super-duper. Just made two characters, took me only 20 minutes (and it was my first time after reading the character generation section once).

Having a unified task system is the bee's knees. I mean, I like the Ct one, but it was just clunky to look up each skill since each skill was a special situation in and of itself. Now, unified system. Standard difficulty modifiers. Advice on when NOT to roll. All lovely.

And I got Mercenary too. Hot damn if that book ain't sexy. Maybe I got a later printing or something but I don't see any of the horror that others were baying about. In either book actually. Both are really good to go.

And the character generation is awesome. I did it the total random way, stats all in a line, pick a career based on it and hope to get in. Lovely. Both characters made it to five terms, a bevy of skills, and great little backstories to boot. I cannot WAIT to spring this on my players.

Anyway just wnated to gush. Happy about both books really. I'll possibly post again once I've deeply read both books but so far, it's a winner.

Side question - how does one tell what printing on has? My Traveller book is just peachy - haven't noticed any errors or such yet. And deck plans look all right...

Wonder if your copy has the errors corrected and latest deck plans or if you were a bit blinded by your excitement at receiving the new books. If you could check to see if these corrections are in your book. I'm curious.
Core book errata LINK
Deck plans part 1 LINK
Deck plans part 2 LINK

I don't own Mercenary.

My understanding is that the fourth (current) printing of the full-sized core book has the errata and revised deckplans incorporated. This is also true of the Pocket version, whicj is the new shiny that I just pricked up yesterday.

Yep, just checked, it is indeed the errata fixed corebook! Accidentally worked out for me then! Whee!

So, again, I'm stoked. Still haven't had time to really read it in depth though - just the character creation, as I said. Really like the aging rules now, actually. And I rolled up two more character last night - a loser who had horrible stats (one 8, everything else 4s and 5s) who, not surprisingly, failed every survival roll for every career he tried (1st army, then drafted into the army, then wanderer, and I decided to stop there).

Only saw one mistake - the character creation example of Jamison has him making 4th officer in the first term. As I understand the rules, you only make 1 roll for advancement each term (barring special event) and he should have only made rank 1, not rank 2, in one term. Is this correct?

I can only go by every prior edition of the rules here (not having MGT) and say that looks correct. It's been the history of the game to allow two advancements in a term where the first one is to Rank 1. This used to be called Commission (to Rank 1, being the first officer rank) and Promotion (to Rank 2), with further Promotions (Rank 2 to 3, etc.) being limited to one advancement per term.

Your enthusiasm is refreshing! I hope you get at least as much enjoyment out of the game as I have. what really counts is what happens around your game table.

Don't know about the other versions, but MGT Merchants do not have commissions and two separate sets of ranks for officers and non officers.

Here are the Merchant ranks in my MGT Core rulebook:
Rank 0 Crewman
Rank 1 Senior Crewman
Rank 2 4th Officer
Rank 3 3rd Officer
Rank 4 2nd Officer
Rank 5 1st Officer
Rank 6 Captain

Many people have questioned Jamison Rank in his first term. It has been discussed in threads here and in the mongoose forums but a quick search found no official response.

I don't have MgT book so I will only tell you about the past. LBB (Little Black Book) 1 is where Jamison is first found. In the write up it states:
His application for a commission is a mere formality. As a 4th Officer, he proves hard working and efficient, and quickly recceives a promotion to 3rd Officer.
( left out the die roll info and both happen in the same term)

In LBB 1 Table of Ranks
Rank 1 4th Officer
Rank 2 3rd Officer
Rank 3 2nd Officer
Rank 4 1st Officer
Rank 5 Captain
Rank 6 - (or NA)

If your rank system is different in MgT that might be just a copy typo on Jamison chargen.
If MgT chargen is different in not allowing a chance for promotion the same term as Commision then it might just be a copy typo.

Sorry I could not be of more assistance. I don't have MgT book. (at least not yet as money allows.)

MGT does use a different rank system for merchants, and it is one without commissions.

According to the German version (the only one I have here), Jamison gets
the skill Mechanic-1 with his promotion to 4th Officer, but Mechanic-1 is the
skill connected with a promotion to Senior Crewman - so the 4th Officer ob-
viously is an error.

And thus, a mistake. Thank you!

Only thing I've seen so far, though it's the off-time for me (university lecturer) so I'm in the midst of celebrating not grading papers, which means I haven't had quite enough time to read it fully yet. My wife seems to have the wild notion that I should do housework! For shame! ;)

P.S. - I'm still enthused though. It's a lot better than what folks made it out to be on this board. Actually, I'll be laying aside my Ct stuff now (save for the occasional reference or piece of equipment). Otherwise, for me, I find it all quite good. Closet thing to TNE also (I'm one of the few who liked it).

Yep, I only missed TNE's Education Careers (Undergraduate University, etc.),
as my setting needed something of that kind, but someone wrote a MGT ver-
sion of them and uploaded a PDF to another forum.

Could you PM me with that link, please? I;d like to grab those for myself.
