Illustrated Guide to the Marches

Originally posted by Jonathon Barton: They'll be duly incorporated into my Celestia/Traveller Spinward Marches...
I've just downloaded Celestia and would love to try out Yori. Since you've already done that system any chance of getting the parameter files?

In fact, are you going to put any of them on the web? (Sorry if I already missed the link.) I'd be willing to host them if need be.

Regards PLST

For the sake of curiosity, this is the model of Regina I made a few years back for my Florian model

regina_render.jpg

It was cobbled together from satellite photos from NASA and such. You'll notice, however that I was so proud of it that I didn't want to obscure it with any clouds so it's a lovely sunny day all over Regina =)

Also uploaded is the original texture map. There were bump and specular maps too but this was the main one. I've linked to it using a thumbnail because it's a pretty big image! I think I worled the scale out as 1 pixel = 9 miles.

This was all hand made. What you guys're doing in this thread is phenomonal though. Keep it up.

Very nice work. I hope Hunter and Marc are sending you emails requesting your work in the next super Scouts supplement. If 1248 is to take us beyond Chartered Space, I cannot help but to think this would make perfect illustration to accompany such a book.

Much as Liz Danforth would redo some of her Twilight2000 artwork for mainbook. Has any of her work been commissioned, Hunter/MJD?

Spinward Marches STC is complete and posted...

http://www.jonathonbarton.net/Striker/Yori_Regina_SM.zip

Extract to:
Celestia/Extras/SpinwardMarches

Then edit the Celestia.cfg file and comment out this line:

# StarDatabase "data/stars.dat"

The Yori file is included in the Zip. It is incomplete (I'm still working on the moons for the outer planets)
There is a "Highport" present, but you'll need the Mesh, and probably to tweak the orbital parameters to something less "Hubble-like" *grin*

http://www.trekmeshes.ch/
Download Meshes
I Agree
Stations and Starbases (Radio Button)
3D Studio R4 Checkbox
"Display Meshes"
"Next 5"
Starbase 201
(extract 3dS file to Celestia/Models)

I'm still working on getting the textures working.

More to come...ENJOY!

Jonathon - both links are dead... you sure it's not case-sensitive?

Got it working.

Pretty good stuff! Though the Marches suffer somewhat because all the systems are shown on the same plane
, and most of your textures aren't originals. But I know that's a hell of a lot of work to do so it's not a complaint.

But, for the purposes of visualising what's there it's very good. Though why did you use Tycho numbers for the stars? You'd have been better off making up HIP numbers for them, wouldn't you?

Very Nice! Been playing with this software too, and would like to start something similar (different sector). I was wondering where you got your steller/system data? Is it the Interactive
Atlas of the Imperium or somewhere else? Keep it up, I'll be watching

Tom

Actually, I used my birthdate and the Hex number as the HIP number in the Cold Fusion page I was using to write out the STC file.
(It works out to "12768nnnn")
Celestia interprets that as a Tycho Number...*shrug*

I also used a random Declination, ranging from +5* to -5* from the ecliptic, thinking that would be enough for some random variation, yet not so much that the "1 parsec" distance from a +5* to a -5* Star would be so elongated as to be more than an actual 'Jump-1' (...which I define as 3.26 LY give/take 49%. Not *every* Jump-1 will be exactly 3.26 LY, I'm sure.)

Maybe you Dr. Math Types could give me a better idea of how much "Declination Variation" I could get away with, and still stay within 4.85 LY for a "one parsec" distance between two stars at a distace of around 85 LY from origin?
I.E: Maintain "Jump-1" between Zeycude and Reno (Chronor), as measured from Arba/Lunion (Origin)

Textures: I'm using the default textures for most of the planets in the Yori system for now (though I did a custom one based on Mars - but it kinda sucks. I'm planning on redoing it later.)

I used Crow's texture for Regina this afternoon, with a double-size Earth-Cloud texture...

I'm also starting work on a Cold Fusion page that will go out to Foreven.com, grab a page for a given system, then parse it out and write the associated *.ssc file, but that may be a ways off, or potentially impossible...

I'm also looking for a way to take a standard Traveller Map and convert it into the equatorial-projection that Celestia's Textures use.

*Finally*, add this below the definition for Yori/Dectura/Yori-Downport in the Yori_Regina_SM.ssc file.

{

}</pre>
Hi, Tom!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm pulling my data from the Spinward Marches data at Foreven.com at the moment, but if there's a "better" (more popular, or more canon) source, I'd redo and re-release my data... The catch is that it's got to have *sector* "address", name, subsector name, Stellar Type, and planetary/orbit data for all systems. Foreven.com has Subsector data all listed on one page for easy reference.

I made a form that has blocks for
Sector Address/System Name/Subsector Name/Stellar Type
in it, so I keyed it all in manually, and I wrote Cold Fusion code to fomat the data and append it to the data file on my HDD.

I'm also going to try to work on the math to populate the surrounding Sectors accurately, as well, but that's a ways down the road.

I took your Yori system and added a map I made with a nifty little program called PlanetGen. It's a fractal mapper with a viewer to check your planet in 3D. You can set the specs to match up with the UPP somewhat. It's freeware available here...

I added atmosphere and the clouds from the earth map and voila...

What would be helpful is a .SSC blueprint to plug info into. Certainly would speed things up

Mr. Scarecrow,
You draw most excellent ship models. You know Celestia can use 3D models in it to show space flight.... ;)

Tom

BTW, I posted a request on the Website Issues board for a separate Traveller Artwork board to be set up... there's too much cool stuff (and people capable of drawing/rendering cool stuff) here to ignore this I think

It's funny you should mention that...
Er.... why? </font>
I had an email from Marc a few days ago asking for renders of the Lanthium Petal. He's considering using it in T5, and possibly as a miniature.
