Illustrated Guide to the Marches

Cool, looks alot like it.

Are you using the scale from the deckplans on that page?

Tom

Yep. works out to around 99m long, quite a bit larger than the Type-S...

The planet, if you're wondering, is Reno/Chronor. (Yeah, yeah, far cry from ever having a PF Sloan around it, but I needed a change of pace from Yori all the time!
)

That looks great

Have you noticed that the deckplans make two of the ten cylinders around the middle slightly larger than the others? The missile bay and the cutter bay IIRC.

Yup, doesn't really leave room...they're crammed in there as tight as I can get them... So, I think what I'll do is plant a minimal "base" on 8 of them, and "attach" the other two more thoroughly, then drag them out from the main portion of the body a hair to fudge it into looking more correct...
Either that, or scale 8 of them down slightly...then do the above...
*shrug*

I guess if I *really* wanted to go for a fine ship, I'd build it, inside and out, deck by deck...which I do intend to do (eventually), just not on the P.F. Sloan...

Hmm, do you have a ship in mind for that project?

There are a couple I would really like to see...

or how about design a brand new one, concept, basic paramaters, ship design, then begin the modelling work ;)

I bet you didn't even need the hints...

*munch, munch*

You're right, I didn't need the hints (in fact I didn't understand some of them). How said is that?

Meanwhile ... for Celestia (mentioned earlier in this thread) I've made a little tool: an editor for SSC files. Its still a bit crude but give it a try and see what you think.

Hemdian,

All I get is Run-time error '35610' Invalid Object

Every time I try to open an SSc file =(

I'm using Windows XP (with SP2) on both my home and work machines.

Hi Crow

Bummer! Okay, I'm not sure why you are getting an error, but I do know the part of the code that uses an object and its near the file handling routines. I can rewrite it to not use this method ... but it'll take a day or two.

I got that error when I tried to open the Yori.ssc file right off the bat.

So I tried with the solarsys.ssc, and it worked.
Then I tried again with the Yori.ssc, and it worked...

Peter, I sent you an email with my observations...didja get it?

'cept that it works for spacecraft ones for me, too...

In fact, I used it to add spacecraft to one of the systems I have done, and it worked pretty well (aside from not taking into account that planet-around-system period is calculated in Standard Earth Years, while moon/spacecraft-around-planet is calculated in Earth Standard Days or Lunar Months or some other thing (that I can't recall off the top of my head...)

You also can't use it to create a new SSC file from scratch.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a Traveller version, that uses "orbit numbers" (and fractions thereof) instead of AU, and automatically calculates the Orbital Period (at least for planets) based on Solar Mass, though calculating the orbital period for Moons would be much more valuable, particularly when the moon is a sizeable fraction of the planet's size.

Even better would be a barycenter for the World/Moon combination...

But, I digress.

Hi Jonathan

Yes I did get your email, thanks, I hope to work on the editor this weekend. There is, however, already a rough Traveller-isation built into the tool: the diameter field excepts S=n (where n = "1" - "9", "A", or "S"), and the orbit field accepts O=n (where n = "0" - "9"). There is little or no validation at this stage.

I've built a Suleiman 100 dTon Type S Scout for Celestia.
It's a 500K zip file and you can download it HERE

Full installation instructions are included in the README file.
I've also included two unmarked hull textures to make it easier for you to create your own paint schemes.

Enjoy

Is this what you had in mind...

Notice the credits on the bottom of the pic and let me know if this is OK.

Otherwise enjoy

Thanks and more to come.

Tom

Ha!

Lovely.

To be fair, when I mentioned that I want crediting as the original artist, I was really more referring to the fact that I'd want crediting if the model was altered in anyway and posted somewhere else. You don't need to credit me on every picture. That just spoils a perfectly good picture.

Cheers

Okay, I think I'm beginning to get the hang of Celestia ...

Dectura rising as seen from surface of Yori.

yori-scene-2.jpg
Dectura rising as seen from low orbit of Yori.

yori-scene-3.jpg

What do you think?

Minor tip about Celestia: axial tilt is measured relative to the system baseline ("ecliptic"?), and not relative to the orbit of the planet or moon in question!

So, for example, Yori's axis is inclined at -66 degrees to its orbit, which is at 29 degrees to its primary's plane, which is at 24 degrees to the main star ... but in Celestia you enter -13 degrees (which is the angle of Yori's axial tilt relative to the main star).

------------------------------

Meanwhile, v1.1 of the SSC editor has been posted. It uses an alternative file processing technology that hopefully is more robust (but makes the distribution file much bigger), it will remember the last file location used, and for asteroids/comets/spacecraft you can enter a non-integer size. More improvements as and when.
