Is there a Chance for a T20 licence for Avenger ??

I'm new to Traveller and really like the T20 Handbook from Quicklink and the 1248 Background as a Starting Point for a new Player.

I'm just confused regarding the problems that seem to be between Avenger & Quicklink.

Avenger states that they would like a licence (and I would like to see that happen for the pure egoistical reason of more input as player and GM)

I don't see anything new concerning this on Qiucklink. Can anybody tell me why ?
It would be in their interest to have more products for their rulesets so that it appeals to a larger group of customers, wouldn't it?

Sorry, just a bit confused and frustrated right now ...

First I've heard of it since Avenger turned down my offer of a license previously.

Hunter

Doesn't mean it won't possibly happen in the future, just means I haven't been approached about it since. I have no problems working out a license with them.

Hunter

"Turned down" isn't the phrase I'd use. Nor am I quite sure I said I'd like a T20 license.

There was some discussion right when Hunter first returned and I wasn't sure if it was worth doing for us at the time.

(That's not meant to sound so negative. What I mean is whether the benefits made it worthwhile for us; it's not a comment on QLI's T20 publishing which is of course a quite different situation. You'll note that the T20 Players Book coming out soon has my name on it, and I'm expecting to earn royalties on it!).

Anyhow, as I recall I wasn't very sure what we should do so I decided to talk to William and the others about all the relevant issues.

Communication between myself and Hunter then lapsed for about 4 months. Now, the last thing that had been said - entirely correctly - by Hunter was that we needed a license for our existing T20 materials.

So, with no license in place and no immediate prospect of obtaining one - assuming we decided to pursue it - we removed the T20 content from our products as a coutrest.

Of course, having done that, this meant that oif we decided to take up a license there would be another big round of conversions to make, which brought the matter to a de facto rest. By the time communication restarted, we'd pretty much lurched onto the path we were going to follow. And here we are.

I don't recally saying I wanted a T20 license. I DID say there were things Avenger cannot do without one, and these are things some fans seem to want, but I've never said I was pursuing a T20 license. I think someone has misconstrued something I said.

MJD:

Every time I read one of your posts, you seem to be explaining, in depth, something you said, something Avenger did, something Avenger did not do, the difference between Avenger and QLI, or someone else's quote on one of the above. When do you find time to actually write (like for pay)? ;)

Perhaps you need some generic answers that you can just post a link to speed up the process.

[Don't bother responding to this, write another page for publication instead.]

Hunter:
Just for the sake of personal curiosity, how much does a T20 liscense cost and does it cover just one project, or is it per year, or is it perpetual? Inquiring minds want to know?

If it is a trade secret (like discussing salaries) then never mind, I'll just file it away with other great unanswered questions like how light can be a particle and a wave at the same time or the quantum state of 'both'.

It's per year, typically an upfront fee at the start of the year, which is applied against royalties that come due during that year. Royalties are generally around 20% of what is sold.

Just as a note, there really shouldn't be much issue using T20 and 1248 together. The 1248 books are system-less from what I understand.

Hunter

Hunter's right. They're systemless, so you can use any set of stats or rules you want. There is no problem at all using T20 with 1248.

Thanks for that much input everybody !

The important part for me being a soon to be published T20 Players Handbook (Joy !) and the hope for future projects - Adventures, Race Sourcebooks, etc. in 1248 with T20 Stats.

I really like the Rulebook and I have compared it to B5 1st & 2nd Ed, Jovian Chronicles D20, Farscape D20 & D20 Modern & Future from WotC.

My Players wanted SF the D20-way, and I will go T20. It's just well done from my perspective.

When I bought the Hardcover of the Rules 1248 just started to become available at the time and I really liked the concept and possibilities.
(Btw - are the 1248 Print-Books comparable to the Hardcover or do they have another binding ? That would be something to look into)

So I just was frustrated when the development of the rules slowed and the 1248 Support for T20 seemed to vanish. I really don't wanna argue about anything here, it's just what I perceived.
All of that can have completely legitimate reasons and I accept that, it's just so frustrating from a fan's point of view.

So - thanks for what all of you did up to now, it's hard work for sure, and good Luck in future projects.

I will have to look out for that Player T20 Book ...

Same here, I enjoy Avengers products and QLI's Avenger put out some really good material on the Gateway Domain too like the Cluster .pdf and it would be nice to see some T20 stats in future Avenger books but I understand MJD reasons for not including them in the Avenger .pdfs.

Looking forward to the players .pdf.

I'd like to see more T20 material too.

However, it's good that they had the foresight to make T20 world and ship stats more or less match CT, so I can pretty much plug in any CT (or for that matter, MT) adventure without too much fuss.

The only gap is characters (which 76 Gunmen goes a long ways towards addressing) and DCs (which I can handwave pretty easy).

That was the whole reasoning behind it! It made more sense to design things to be as compatible as possible with the older material. Too much good stuff there to ignore and render difficult to use.

Need a few more like 76 Gunmen I think.

What specifically is the gap you see with DCs?

Simply that if I picked up a CT adventure, I'd have to make up/convert DCs for skill check and saves. Again, no that I'm especially concerned about this, because I handwave it in my home games and rarely bother writing anything up ahead of time in those.

(wanders over to bookshelf and gropes for an example)

In Double Adventure 1, Annic Nova, page 11, under the area 6 description, it says that it requires a throw of 14+, DM +1 per day spent, DM +1 if intelligence 11+, to learn the alien script.

It seems pretty clear to me that the roll is meant to be nearly impossible unless you study for a day or more. Eventually you succeed.

A "faithful" conversion to me would be to make the task a DC 25 intelligence check or education check, +2 per day spent... that would put the upper end just out of reach without the study bonus for most humans, but eventually yield success.

But then, T20 has broader skill coverage, and it seems like a skill like Decipher Script or Use Alien Device would apply; I might make the DC higher but make it a Decipher Script or Use Alien Device check.

Not that it's that hard for me to do, just not as trivial as UWPs or ship stats.

T20/1248 support hasn't really changed at all. We're still publishing 1248 books, which are for Traveller. T20 is a Traveller rules set. They're completely compatible. We just are't putting stats in...

We just are't putting stats in...

Which I really enjoy. I'm a rules tinkerer by nature (even though I'm really considering T20 "it" for my space/sci0fi game for the forseeable future), and I like have all this great source material which can be easily meshed into whatever setting I have. It's a trend I'm looking forward to seeing much more of!

Avenger is MJD's publishing enterprise, doing licensed Traveller and some of his own non-Traveller projects.

Thank you for the reply. I'd..what the?..ANCHORAGE?!? I was born in Anchorage! I live in Texas but my sister and her family are RV'ing at this moment in Alaska about 250 miles from Anchorage. They're heading there tomorrow (just talked to her on the phone).

Small world, eh?

Avenger Enterprises is my own private venture. It started out as a sort of design house publishing through QLI. During Hunter's long absence I had to find another publisher so these days Avenger publishes through Comstar Games. That's worked out pretty well for us both.

Some people seem to have trouble telling Avenger and QLI apart, probably because Avenger originally published through QLI and of course my name is associated with a lot of QLI products.

This is further complicated by the forthcoming T20 Players' Book because I did that, too. It's actually very simple:

MJD (me) does a certain amount of freelance work in the games industry and also in the real world where I write a lot of books. I also do non-writing freelance work (security, defence analysis etc). My QLI-published work falls in this category, ie me-as-freelancer.

Avenger Enterprises is me and a few other guys doing Traveller and some other things and can be considered a 'design house' which supplies finished products to the publisher. That publisher is Comstar Games and we have an exclusivity deal with them, so Avenger can ONLY publish through Comstar.

This doesn't rule out me or any of the Avenger people doing 'private' freelancing (it better not; most of my income comes from private freelancing!) as individuals.

Some people have been confused by the distinction between Avenger as an entity and me as an individual. *I* can work for whoever pays me. *Avenger* is limited by its agreements (and benefits from them too).

That any clearer?
