It's Here!

Like I say it is still there in a form (and one which I think is better for it). The initiative is still tickish in a way, effect can be used in combat and timing rolls can be made if you must.

It was an innovative idea but fell down in a lot of ways. I was never truly comfortable with it but could never quite figure out why.

I suspect that your discomfort arose from the fact that it simply didn't produce reasonable results. And the numerous valiant attempts at fixing the mechanic either (a) broke it in a different way; or (b) were so fussy that they weren't worth the effort.

I have no problem with innovation, but the innovative thing needs to (a) work and (b) be *superior* to the more pedestrian alternatives.

And since the 2d6 mechanic has been with gamers for a *long* time (at least as far back as the 1930s in Monopoly), it seems highly unlikely to me that there are any new, *useful* 2d6 mechanics remaining undiscovered. Therefore, I'd strongly urge designers to be extremely skeptical of innovative 2d6 mechanics. In all likelihood, its already been tried and discarded for good reason.

For those who think that the T/E mechanic is salvageable -- or not defective in the first place -- the OGL gives them an opportunity to let the market pass judgment on it. I personally suspect that no version of the T/E mechanic will be embraced by a significant number of gamers, but I could be wrong.

From Virginia

Hi,

My copy just arrived today in Northern Virginia. I was surprised to see it so quickly seeing that I live in the US.

So, back to the original topic....

Anyone else received their copy?

Daniel

Got mine yesterday. I put up a brief opinion piece on MGT but the long and short of it is I like it very much. There are some weaknesses that I'll have to houserule (Ship Shares, Starship power went totally missing, No missile scaling for ships over a couple hundred tons, and weak pulse lasers).

On the whole, though it turned out better than my expectations. I thought they were really tied to T/E and it's extremely nice to see they listened.

Got mine yesterday, stayed up WAY to late last night reading...

I was a bit disapponted that they didn't change World Generation very much. They expanded the tables to include the possible rows (fixed in Book 6), but didn't do much else. Maybe Marc wouldn't let them, but I would still have liked to see Population tied to habitability somehow and starport type tied to population.

Oh well, maybe Scouts or maybe an OGL product...

Just noticed last night...

Hi,

I just noticed something about my Mongoose Traveller Book, that I overlooked last night when I posted about recieving it. The title page indicates that it was printed in the US. I guess I had assumed that since Mongoose is from the UK, and the spelling of some of the words in the book follow UK rather than US practice, I had just assumed that it was printed in the UK and shipped here. However, after digging the box out of the trash I see it was actually shipped to me from a US address for Mongoose games in Ohio.

Keep in mind that with the very weak dollar right now, the US is a low cost country for wise printing procurement. ;)

Exactly. Compared to England and Europe, America looks like how China looks to us Americans (low cost work, high population to export their products to, good distribution capabilities, not making any kind of government related cracks).

Give them a nudge (and check your local delivery office).:(
Post-person has already been and delivered my post - no card or anything to say they tried to deliver something that wouldn't go through the letter box. I'll try poking the Mongeese people with a pointy stick...

Milton Keynes, is it? I seem to remember at least a couple of Traveller books heading that way earlier this week. . .

Matt: please check your mongoose emails. Full details are in the email I sent you.

Just for future reference, how does MP send out books within the UK? By Royal Mail, Parcelforce or what?

Hay Grufty, did Matt actuall tell you how MP send their books, Royal, Pacelforce, etc.? Enquiring minds want to know.
