Largest private yacht

Going by the formulas worked out in this thread, a single world with a population of 90 billion, a TL of 15, and an 'industrial' trade classification will have 2,377 trillionaires* and up. One of them will be a 10-quintillionaire*.

* Short scale.

If we assume a 50,000T yacht will cost MCr50,000 and that no one will buy a yacht more expensive that 1/200th of his wealth, one such world will have 792 people who could afford it (which doesn't mean that they would all buy one).

Frankly, I hope that I've made a mistake in my calculations somewhere. But 15 trillion people do generate a lot of money.

Truth is, the standard deviation measure is probably invalid. In first world nations, the average income is between the 60th and 80th percentiles, and the top 1% of the population is at least 10% of the GDP.

Roman Abramovich has an estimated wealth of $11,000,000,000+

He owns a Boeing 767 - $180,000,000, and his main yacht - $500,000,000. Not to mention the other 4 yachts, one of which cost $250,000,000

That's about 10% of his wealth.

I'm making up short one-paragraph entries to my library data about Imperial shipbuilding companies

Let's assume that the Emperor and archdukes and dukes and world rulers will use ships that formally belong to the IN and similar organizations and thus do not qualify as private yachts. We're talking about yachts belonging to private multi-billionaires. (Jump-6 yachts, of course ;)).

Hi Hans,

I've designed a 3,000 ton J6 M3 Yacht using mongoose rules with heat & radiation shielding coming in at 3,319.5 MCr, it has a 12 ton owners suite and 2 8 ton guest suites and 29 other staterooms for servants and crew, I also included 98 tons of luxuries (swimming pool, ball room?) and 2 4 ton sick bays
a Pinnace and 2 air/rafts. I called it the Archduke class and it's main use for Megacorp executives to stay in touch with HQ at Core,

not sure if you'd need bigger?

Regards

David

For my present purpose all I need is a tonnage figure for a bit of chrome. I'm writing a one-paragraph library data entry for Nirkre + Aarnas, a shipbuilding company that built several of the Tigress class dreadnaughts1. For inspiration I'm looking at real world shipbuilder Blohm + Voss who built the Bismarck and still builds warships for the German Navy. It also built two of the biggest private yachts in the world, so I'd like to include a sentence to the effect that N+A built the X dT <This> and the Y dT <That>. Only, how much should I make X and Y? (Bearing in mind that I like to keep my TU as compatible with the OTU as I can, so the answer "Anything you like, it's your TU" is not helpful).
1 Non-canonical (but canon-compatible, I hope).
Currently I'm inclined to go with somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000T, with one being 100T bigger than the other. Logically there are some exceedingly rich people in the Imperium.

Hi Hans,

I would suggest Dulinor's yacht is 1kt bigger than Stephron's ;-)

As Oberlindes have a 60kt J5 Cruiser at their disposal, I'd guess any mega rich sophont with an ego complex would want something slightly larger and faster, so I'd go for 75,000 ton max, sorry I got the wrong end of the stick earlier.

(One idea just occurred to me: A big garden or park. Perhaps even a hunnting preserve.) <snip>

About ten years ago my wife and I found ourselves designing a home here in Virginia for a very wealthy family who own auto parts stores throughout the US. A big chunk of the home was the "atrium"--a glass-enclosed park designed to resemble, both visually and in climate, the island of Maui. We imported palm trees, lava rock, the whole nine yards. It was "get away" space when the press of business prevented really getting away.

Brilliant. I've always loved conservatories, but that one takes the cake.
