I'm new to th site. I have Traveller books from way back and I saw there was a new version of the game. Should I get the new book? I always like Traveller.

a lot of folks here play CT/MT -- so if you have the 'old stuff', you'll have no problems finding people

I use MT/TNE myself which is considered old as well, but nothing like CT which goes back 3 decades.

Which books do you have, and do you like them?

Hi Trentor, Welcome to CotI.

A quick guide to the acronyms:
CT: Classic Traveller - the original LBBs (Little Black Books) of A5 dimensions
MT: Mega Traveller - the next incarnation, dealing with the civil war and empire collapse
TNE: The New Era - deals with Virus and the rebirth of civilisation.
MGT: Mongoose Traveller - the new version, essentially a rewrite and update of CT.
T20: An offshoot of MT using D20 rules (I think) - I dunno much about it. Somebody will correct me, no doubt.

You will find people to play with and converse with in all of the above editions, and also using 1248 (the next empire after rebirth) and GURPS (alternative timeline where the civil war and collapse never happened).

All of the above descriptions assume you choose to play in the OTU (Official Traveller Universe) published background. Many Traveller players do, but many others choose to create their own ATU (Alternative Traveller Universe)

I'm a CT ATU player, but if you want to find face to face players in your area, you might be better going for the current MGT game. Read through the forums here for more info, particularly the Mongoose forum for the new game.

An implementation of a CT setting into the D20 rules. Has nothing to do with MegaTraveller, other than it has a feel in play closer to that of MT than to those of CT, TNE, or T4.

Specifically, it's set around IY 1000, rather than around IY 1100 of CT, and 1116-1135 of MT.

MGT is "officially" not tied to a setting, but so far, the only OTU material released has been ca IY 1100-1105... just before the 5FW.

Note that CT also includes the full-sized hardbound The Traveller Book (TTB) and The Traveller Adventure (TTA) published in the early 1980s (they were in essence compilations of some of the LBBs into a more coherent, organized form).

Then there is T4 (also known as Marc Miller's Traveller), which came out after TNE but was a heavily-modified CT set in the early days of the 3rd Imperium (well before the setting of CT).

Marc is working on yet another version, T5 (and has been for a long time, evidence the formation of the T5 section of this forum in 2001... Marc Miller once stated that "T5 will appear in June of 2007". He has several fresh ideas for the new version. The base is a new milieu based in a time of great expansion for the fledgling Third Imperium (where they begin to bump up against powerful neighbors), while sourcebooks for other milieux will be available, as well.

However, the playtest release was made available in February 2009, and a revised playtest version has been released.

CT: 1977-86
MT: 1987-92
TNE: 1993-95
T4: 1996-98
GT (GURPS Traveller): 1998-current*
T20: 2002-current*
Hero Traveller (Hero system): 2007-current*
MGT: 2008-current
T5: in playtest

*subject to withdrawal of permission due to Mongoose/Marc Miller agreement. See more informed persons for details.
