News About Avenger Enterprises

Avenger, again.

Okay, well I've created a new identity since I'll be posting here on behalf of Avenger and I don't want to use my MJD account for various reasons.

Anyway, various things are afoot. About which , see below.

Avenger had something of a hiatus for the past year. There were various reasons for that, largely stemming from the amount of other stuff I had to do. The fruits of that are becoming apparent (forex, there's a show called Triggers on US TV about now. I was involved...).

But we've also found time to relaunch Avenger Enterprises. Avenger never completely went away; we were doing a number of low-priority (or best-not-talked-about) things in the background, but we're back on the scene.

Time was, we were the only non-Mongoose publisher that could do Official Traveller Universe products, thanks to our special deal with Mongoose. Actually, that deal is still in place but we won't be doing any more 'official' Traveller for various reasons. Nor will I personally be writing OTU materials for Mongoose. I might do non-OTU stuff for their Traveller line, but I'm done with the OTU.

My decision to cease working on 'official' Traveller was not taken lightly. For somewhat convoluted reasons, the decision was financially motivated - it is simply not viable for me to try to produce anything 'official'. I've given up discussing this so don't ask - I just want to head off any rumours. The truth is that I quit working on Traveller for reasons that made sense to me, and that's all there is to it.

However, that does leave the Mongoose open license. So long as you don't touch the OTU, you can publish Traveller-compatible materials. That's (among other things) what Avenger is now doing.

First up is the Far Avalon game setting. It's not an 'ATU' as such, in that it was created as a setting in its own right, in which you can use the Traveller rules if you like, rather than as a setting for Traveller.

Maybe that sounds like hair-splitting, but Far Avalon was not created using the Traveller rules (we used our own system, more about that later) and some different background assumptions were made. As anyone familiar with my previous work will expect, it's a setting where a small group of adventurers can make a difference and where there is scope for a wide range of adventuring styles.

We're following Far Avalon with several starships and spacecraft books, which are compatible with Far Avalon and other settings using the Traveller rules. These books use the Mongoose ship design system and add a few new concepts as well as providing some different ships to encounter, shoot at or whatever.

We also have two big adventures underway. Counterweights and Measures is completed and in production, and I'm working on Infinity Lost right now. More about those another time.

We also have a rules set in production, named QADVentures (Quick and Dirty Adventures). The world-building book (QADVerse) is done; the core rules need me to find time to add in some fiddly bits. Hopefully I'll get that done by New Year.

Anyway, Avenger is back on the scene. We have product out and a lot more to come. We also have a facebook group:

I'm not planning on getting into discussions of Avenger stuff here - I don't visit COTI that much. We will have a dedicated forum of our own soon (it exists but it's not live yet), so I'll post the link. I'd suggest that questions be posted there - there's some chance I'll see them that way.

Having said that, I am open to suggestions for what Avenger could/should/probably should not do. Best to use the Facebook group or mail direct, but if you want to post here I'll see it sooner or later I guess.

We're not bound by the OTU (nor, necessarily, by the background assumptions of the Traveller rules) so we do have leeway to produce some quite varied stuff.

We were considering maybe doing some entirely alternate materials (historical, steampunk, horror, low-tech/fantasy or maybe all of those) which would use the Mongoose open license. I'm pretty sure that stretches the definition of 'Traveller' further than it's supposed to go but all the same it might be an option. The question is simply one of viability. Is there a market? You tell me....
