Non standard ship design questions

Jamus

SOC-12
Here are a few questions I would like some help with.

1. how much does the contra grav/anti-grav unit in a star ship weigh?

2. how much energy does said unit consume?

3. how much cheaper would a hull built with out grav tech cost?

consider a ship built at TL12

discuss.

The short answer is not what you want to hear ;)

It depends on the system being used.

In CT and T20 its included in the basics. Figure that its wrapped up in the maneuver drive factors. So a ship could be built cheaper by not including a maneuver drive (and all that goes with it). The X-Boats are a prime example. It would be cheaper by just the amount of the maneuver drive. TL makes no difference.

Other systems handle it differently, FF&S1 perhaps being the most specific and varied.

Yeah, you really need to be a little more specific. Are you talking one of the games? Which one? RL? Thought experiment?

From FF&S2:

Max thrust (in kN) = 10 x Thrust Factor x Loaded Mass.

TL12 High Efficiency AG:

Vol (m3/kN): 0.002
Mass (t/kN): 0.0013
Power (MW/kN): 0.0007
Price (MCr/kN): 0.00002
Area (m2/kN): 0.002
Thrust Factor: 0.16

thats ok.
basically I would like to create a TL12 scout ship that is bare bones. no grav or contra grav, will generate gravity by maintaning 1g velocity or deceleration with decks stacked like a building ala star frontiers. from what I have read this is possible in theory.

TL12 High Efficiency AG:

Vol (m3/kN): 0.002
Mass (t/kN): 0.0013
Power (MW/kN): 0.0007
Price (MCr/kN): 0.00002
Area (m2/kN): 0.002
Thrust Factor: 0.16
this is insane imo, something the size of a 2liter bottle and wieghing a few pounds can produce gravity for a ship while consuming almost no energy???. and can do it for 2cr...

lol funny how when i was younger this sort of thing never really got my attention or bothered me..

I must be an old curmudgion

Yep, can be done pretty easy in FF&S1, and MT too I think (there was even an article, or series, specifically dealing with low tech space craft that might have some ideas for you, it was in Challenge iirc but I'm not sure what issues)

That would be "High Efficiency" indeed. The values listed are per kilo-litre of hull volume affected in FF&S1 iirc. Not sure what FF&S2 kN's are.

Welcome to the club :D

Ive decided half of the tonnage of the M-drive is gravitics, design with that in mind and its good to go if kind of a band aid fix.

A quick rule of thumb is that 10 kilonewtons is equivalent to 1 ton of thrust, and for a 1 Metric ton craft would produce 1 G of acceleration. I will let someone more anal-retentive than I (if such a person exists) explain in further detail.
