Official Traveller Fiction

ery long time now, held a license to publish fiction set in the Official Traveller Universe.

We have recently republished some of our long-'lost' fiction - Yesterday's Hero, Diaspora Phoenix and a collection of shorts named Slices of Life. Depending upon the response, we are considering a new line of shorts and possibly novels. The first of those will likely be Sunburst Setting, which I started writing in 1996. Sunburst Setting is, as the name perhaps implies, set in the dying days of the Final War.

I had considered (and may still consider) a kickstarter for Traveller fiction, but for now we're testing the waters with these releases. If there seems to be a viable market then we'll proceed with others. Of course, that does mean that now is a good time to let us know what you'd like to see in terms of era, setting and such like.

I currently have a 295 page novel based on Traveller (MT mostly) in the Glimmerdrift and Hinterworlds finished and am looking for a means of distribution. Interested?

I would love to see some Traveller fiction set in the classic era, perhaps along the Spinward Main.

I did read the three TNE novels last year.

I'm also working on Traveller novel (post-5FW, partially in the Spinward Marches). Only 2/3 done (65K words so far) and I'm beginning to consider the distribution and copyright issues. Although not finished yet, I'd be interested in being included in any general conversations.

Mine is 200,000 + words, 295 pages, and set on the cusp of the MT breakdown of the Imperium with the assassination of the Emperor. I gave it an antibellum ACW feel where events are slowly tearing the 3rd Imperium apart and various local political interests are breaking away from the empire.

Regarding other people's fiction (ie written by those outside Avenger):

I can guarantee our own stuff (ie mine) complies with Traveller's ethos, canon and general feeling. Anyone else's work would require a pretty lengthy editing process (even if no actual ediitng, I'd still have to go through it to ensure compliance) before I could take responsibility for publishing it as 'official'.

I'm not sure how to get around this - right now I simply don't have time to work through an edit. I'm open to suggestions though.

At the moment they're in PDF format. There's a plan afoot to do Kindle and such like but I'm a barbarian and I don't understand stuff like that.

Testerday's Hero can be found at http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/produ...on?filters=0_0_10134_0_0&manufacturers_id=645

ie under Avalon Game Company. The Traveller Wiki is entirely wrong about this one, BTW. It's not (and was never) a 6-page story. It's an episodic novel that includes a number of stories... one of which might be 6 pages long I suppose.

I personally love anything Traveller and will read and re-read anything related. Hemdian's novel is better than the only actual Traveller novel I read which was Gateway to the stars. It deserves to be published.

Spinward Marches Story

I have been working on and off on a story set in the Spinward Marches, based on the original set of books. I have tweaked a few of the subsector planets a bit to get the story to work right, along with playing a bit with the Traveller history. I would not say that is conforms in every detail to the Traveller Universe, rather that I use the Traveller universe as the background. I was trying to catch the flavor of the Andre Norton "Solar Queen" series (the original four stories). I do use the Ancients as one of the major plot elements. I am also a fan of H. Beam Piper's books on future history (Space Viking, Cosmic Computer, Little Fuzzy series) and also his Paratime stories.

As it would be based on the Traveller Universe, but with my own take, what would be the status with respect to your license?

Virtually impossible, I fear. We have a rather unique status in that we can do OTU fiction and sell it, but that means we do have to tread carefully regarding tweaks and general fiddling-about.

So, basically, what you are saying is that with respect to your operation, you need a fully compatible story for publishing any Traveller fiction.

Therefore, it sounds like I would need to approach FFE and/or Marc Miller for using Traveller as a basic background for a novel or short story.
