Xander: Right, there comes a point where you have to either move on, or just buy yourself a Klingon costume and go with it.

Hello.
Maybe there should be a counter on all threads so people can say if they think a thread is a flamewar.
Personaly i cant remember many on here but they i have a thick skin and no sense of self preservation.
An outsider may consider a thread to be burning but the people in the discusion may just be slinging shit at each other for the fun of it, I dont think everyone hates Trader jim (it just seams that way).
Well this is my 100million cred opinion (.02c adjusted for inflation).
Buy war bonds
More socks.

Morning Rotters,

In my view, based on my training as a instructor, the only stupid/dumb question is the one not asked. However, there are questions that probably should be asked in a one on one situation and not in front of a group. In this case I don't think the question asked is stupid.

Before getting to the definition copied from the Web here is my view: A flamewar starts out as a discussion for a specific topic, moves to an arguement in which neither side agrees with the other or attempts to support their position, finally the parties invovled start shouting at each other and using various degrading and/or foul language. The end result is that most people stop looking at the topic thread and/or the web master/moderator has to close out the thread.

From Urbandictionary.com

Flamewar - A heavy discussion on forums that usually ends in total chaos. Insulting words are used frequently. Often a flamewar is started by a troll, either in the thread title, or in an offtopic post that is added to the thread. Administrators will often close a thread if it has turned into a flamewar.

A n00b had started an innocent thread about graphical differences between Half-Life 2 and Doom3, but when Brassmonkey came in, the discussion turned into a flamewar, until Abom|nation had to close it down.

Obviously TJ is popular among us Aussies, eh? (is that a good thing or a bad thing?)

May I ask one stupid question? What's a 'flameware'?

Flamewars usually start around specific topics. Politics (especially post-9/11) and religion are always guaranteed to get people yelling at eachother. As is a post that says something along the lines of 'X version of Traveller is better than all the rest, and anyone who likes the others is an idiot'.

They usually involve two sides having strong opinions that will never agree on anything. One or both sides can be utterly ignorant of the truth behind the matter (especially when it comes to current affairs), so if someone else wades in pointing out the errors they'd just get yanked into the fight.

As the one who may have brought this on, I'll jump in and say that I think it's ok. But as someone said (you know who you are!), don't bring back any flamewars.

I thought of another one. Popping little jokes onto an old thread so it resurfaces as a series of banter is irritating, esp. when it starts to bury a thread with lots of good stuff in it.

How can a thread a month or 20 or so old be considered out dated? Especially when the whole site is based on a time frame a couple thousand years in the future! The time difference when looking back from Emperor Strephons rule is so insignificant as to be considered simultaneous.

You bumped a two year old thread just to say that?

And not only that, you already said that exact same thing on the other thread?

(general response from here (link) but it seemed more appropriate here)

I would just add that aside from it not being a bad thing IMO to have some honey along with the stick there are IMO some exceptions:

- open polls
- "gauging" threads (similar to polls)
- any thread where the subject is still ongoing but development has stopped at the moment, usually by the author(s)*
- stickied threads (which are usually one of the above)

As for going back and reading old threads, some of the threads here on CotI are gems and work out things people look for in their campaigns, discussions about the OTU, or are data dumps. So they may still be of use even though the thread is now dead. I know I keep several threads handy for personal use for my Traveller games. Usually though I just do a search for a topic that I need to look up, skim it until I find what I'm looking for, and move on.

* for example I have a Tachikoma thread that's technically "dead" that I intend to resurrect some day when I get back to watching GitS:SAC and crank out a new version of the design as the thread is still a work in progress

Let's put this subject to bed, once and for all.

I have never even heard of a forum board until I saw this one a few months ago during a random search. I read a few topics at random, and thought I might have something to contribute, so I registered.

My act of 'THREAD NECROMANCY' was completely unintentional. There was no deliberate attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of these forums. I simply thought it was a good opportunity to comment on some topics. I am a fountain of useless information, after all...

It was not my intention of all to open the industrial sized can of worms that I did. However, I did not know that it was against the rules to comment on subjects that were not in today's paper, as it were.

A simple suggestion may help...is there a FAQ section for forum newcomers so they know the rules of conduct? If not, it might be a good idea.

I SINCERELY AND HUMBLY APOLOGIZE FOR THE DISRUPTION I CAUSED, AND HAVE TAKEN STEPS TO ENSURE THAT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

FWIW that was my last post on the subject. I failed to add that information last time, mea culpa.

And yes I agree this site could use at least one FAQ, if not several (CotI, T20, etc.), including among other things a link to general netiquette documents. FAQs are notoriously difficult to write and maintain though.

I also agree with Sigg.

[EDIT] general cleanup [/EDIT]

I think someone said you're currently in your parents' basement?
Hey - what's wrong with that? My Dad's had three heart attacks and is retired. He can used the rent money - and I'd rather pay him than pay some stranger. Now if you are a leech and not paying rent...

Dameon

And I stand with Sigg and casey.
I have mentioned somewhere around here that new people to the boards may have relevant information or questions that relate to OLD Threads.
I may have inadvertantly comitted THREAD NECROMANCY myself by replying to a thread about where you where when 9/11 hit. So what if I was not here 4 years ago when they started the thread?
It affected my life then. It affects my life today. I replied when I saw a place where I could add my story without a thought about how long ago the thread was started. ;)
Sure I am still a VERY NEW person here but I paid for my membership because I saw the value it will have to my Traveller universe game.
I try to welcome new people to the forum with the advice to post early and often without giving them directions on how or where to do so.
I have a lot of reading of the threads to catch up on and I only get 15 minutes twice a day during breaks at work to read and write my replies. This means I often miss a lot and only reply to current threads or where I expect others to comment on my comments. :D

If any such FAQ is created, I would request it contains this board's explicit user majority and board admin (who is also the site owner) approval of bumping old threads.

Your gracious words are readily accepted, though I, for one, feel they are completely unnecessary, as I can see no wrong that you have done.

No wrong whatsoever.

And may your pariticpation in these forums continue on into the distant future, posting to whatever topics you wish to; be those topics backwards, forewards, up, down, right, left, old, or new.
