One more Space Battleship Yamato thread

Why did they have to pick the Yamato? The Yamato was a floating hotel for brass for most of the war. Surely there could be better representatives of the IJN in space?

We have Japanese members here, maybe when the thing comes out on DVD, they can ship it to us. However, your link went to the cartoon version...from what I heard, the new film is going to be live action!!

This is when I wish there were more cultural contacts between Japan and North America...as I am trying to find something called American Heroine AstroGirl on DVD (Seasons 1 & 2) for a friend who loves to cosplay the character and no luck.

The Yamato enbodied more than just its being the biggest battleship afloat at the time, it was the spirit of the IJN made real. The very name, Yamato, is the strongest that would be given to a ship.

So if you are going to make a movie about resurrecting some powerful weapon to save your people, the weapon chosen is going to reflect the culture and mythos of the people who write the story.

The British have King Arthur and Excalibur, the Japanese have the Yamato. It doesn't have to be "realistic", but it gives the story a greater, deeper meaning that resonates in the culture watching it. Otherwise, why would they pick this as a plot device when within the film it is shown that Earth's defense forces can already build big monster spaceships? If you look up the significance of the name Yamato, and why it is reserved to a special place in IJN history you'll better understand the why of this film. Remember, it's a Japanese show, and the references within it are not readily apparent to someone outside that community.

But a lot of anime is like that, too.

I would submit that the Japanese film is the "original", so to speak, revamp. The American live action thing is just a studio cash in on another nostalgia blast for Gen-X.
