Personal Shields

In Dune, the shields were belts. In the Foundation series, they are worn as necklaces.

I can see a problem with shields in the possibility that they are not air permeable. This would limit the amount of time they would be usable, as the wearer would be limited to the air contained in the shield on activation. The air inside would also get stale more quickly if an impact to the shield occurs.

Ah, but that's assuming this wasn't considered.

I think the design team probably worked out the life support bug, but it could be the seed for a possible adventure to retrieve such a device

As a different take on the shield idea, IMTU I have high-tech rapid-fire plasma pistol devices slaved to a point-defence fire-control system. Looks a bit like the Predator shoulder gun. If anything approaches the target at more than a few metres per sec it gets zapped.

Interesting. The shoulder gun actually comes from an anime called "Big Wars", or so I recall. A personal point defense system was also brought up in some computer game I used to play many years back... one of the Quake installments?... no, the original "Unreal"?.... no, I can't rightfully remember now, but it was there, and I think you could have more than one.

Ah well

Not seen these. I came up with it myself as a logical extension of the Striker systems.

You'd need more than one anyway (or at least two actuators on a single system - you wouldn't want your head getting in the way of your point-defence system, would you?

Useless against beams, of course.

Reminds me of a weapon system I devised for a character of mine in a munchkin game a couple of decades ago:

When threatened by assailants armed and armoured to the teeth, this character would whip out a little pocket laser about the size of a computer mouse. Derisive laughter was short-lived however when they discovered that this was a target-painting device linked to a cloud-level drone vehicle called Zeus, mounting a multi-megawatt pulse laser.
