Point and laugh time

One of my first renders, from back in 1998!

Oh, hey, nice pic Andrew, did you see the...

...never mind it's gone now.

Hey, this might be cool, maybe even fun for you. How about doing the exact same pic, with all your more developed and honed skill, for comparison. Might be a good exercise? If you have the time and interest.

Laugh? Me??

What? Laugh at something (even over a decade old) that's much better than I'll ever be able to do?
"Surely, you must be kidding."

I'll be the first to admit that I have no artistic (drawing/rendering/whatever) skill whatsoever...

It's obviously not equal to what you can do now, but still not bad at all. :D

I agree with far trader: see what you can do with it these days, if you've the time. Your work is very good.

Really not bad at all. What did you use for software?

I don't have anything going that far back (most of it was burned to protect the innocent), but I do have one dating about 2002, done with a freebie version of Truespace 3.

EDIT: Heh, actually found one that is a year or two older than that. My first attempt at a Fer-de-lance Escort....

"Point and laugh" is something that I will never do with regards to renderart - unless the intent behind the original creation of the picture is to cause the viewer to laugh.

I cannot in good conscience deride people for alleged poor-quality work when it is far better than I could ever do.

Yes, I can see that your work has drastically improved since you created this pic; that doesn't mean that your early efforts are laughable - you had to start somewhere, and I'm a beneficiary of the progress you've made starting there.

I see nothing here worthy of any form of derision, especially laughter.

What I do see is evidence of great talent.

Keep pushing the event horizon!

Actually, with regard to my older work, it is kind of amusing to see some of those first efforts with the benefit of hindsight. Valuable experience, but amusing nonetheless. At the time, everything seemed so hard; hard enough I started and stopped several times in the process. There weren't the resources available on the net today available, so I pretty much learned through experimentation and the manual/help file (most of which are far from great learning tools). But, they're proof that perseverence pays off.

One other thing for all of you that say you don't have any artistic talent - I used to be that guy. I can't draw worth a crap, I can't paint anything more complicated that than a room, and I've got the musical talent of a gnat. But if you learn the tools, cgi WILL give you a pretty good shot at letting you share your visions with the rest of the world. All it takes is time and persistence.

BTW - anybody know if there are any good Fer-de-lance deckplans out there? I might take a shot at far-traders challenge once I finish up a couple of projects.

Back then it'll have been POV. Maybe via Moray.

That's not too bad.

*That* OTOH...:)

Absolutely. We were all crap to start with. Just keep banging the pixels together and you'll get there.

Yeah, I wish I had some of my first efforts to share (a colony ship and a martian airship) they were no better :D

[EDIT] Actually, I tell a lie. One of the very first things I did using Ray Dream Studio! :

Spider Dalek

Crow

Ray Dream Designer 3 was the first 3D program I bought for $99 at Computer City back in 1995. I had no clue how to use it. Eventually learned how to model stuff using Amapi Designer 7. Way much easier to produce cool models with.

I don't know... I kinda think the original render is much better.

hmmm. Anyone know where the sarcasm button is on the keyboard?

I'd work in the reflection on the water and some type of "exhaust" to the rear, of just some motion blur along the direction of flght.

Ironically your first render had a reflection.

BTW, how'd you get the light effect around the engines? Post production or rendered?
