Prometheus

I take it that Prometheus released internationally today? It doesn't come out in the States until the 8th.

I think I've seen too many trailers and ruined it for myself.

Nah, it fits here:

The Lone Star Meet, greet and socialize with your fellow Travellers in the Lone Star Lounge. Random Topics.
...bold mine for emphasis :)

Random Static (the section) is more for (was created in response to) really off the wall stuff. Stuff here is generally of wide interest to Travellers. Sci-fi, news, whatever (as long as it's not otherwise forbidden like real world politics, religion, etc.)

I am glad you posted this thread.

I assumed it wasn't going to be very good given the vague trailer and the fact it opened outside the US so long in advance of the US opening. I will watch for 2D theaters as well now.

Yah, saw it in 2D today. Veeeeerrry nice. If you know the Alien movies, 8/10, if not 5/10.

Love all the tech and the premise and much of the plot. Didn't like the fact the crew never seemed to be a crew and 'discuss' stuff, the captain suddenely came out with the 'I think this is what's going on' which was cool and all, but I'd have liked to see the conversations or the fact finding that got him to that conclusion, instead he sorted of 'blurted it out'.

Nice movie though.

Somewhat Disappointed.

It was a wicked good Action Movie with beautiful special effects and scenery (especially the actresses) and a lot of interesting things to see, but I got none of the Horror/Suspense of the original Alien.

Even the stuff that wasn't in the trailers was a bit predictable. And that ending was pretty amateur for Ridley Scott.

Spoiler:
'Old Guy Weylund's' fake makeup was distracting. They should have gotten someone like Christopher Lee who really is old and knows how to play someone ruthless.

Wait, you meant to tell me that all of those scientists signed on to be in hypersleep for 2 years without knowing WHY they were going?

"Hey! Look at the little space alien that looks like a snake. I think I'll play with it. It's so cute! Especially when it flairs open like a cobra! That's so adorable!"

You would have thought that The Big Guy getting face-raped by a Giant Tentacled Creature after an epic struggle would have had more of a disgusted/repulsed look on his face and struggled a little more. Maybe he's into that sort of thing. That was the whole point of making the FaceHugger back in the original Alien - Ridley Scott admitted that they made it go down the throat to repulse and disgust people.

It's not a direct prequel to Alien. The Big Guy wasn't in the Space Jockey chair when he got ChestBursted, so it's not the same Alien ship.

If you're going to imply that Charlize is going to have sex, you could at least show part of it. It is an R-rated movie.

On the other hand...

Charlize has very nice curves.

LA Times review if anyone is interested.

A big disappointment for me. My expectations were very high for a movie from one of my favorite directors. Mr. Scott seems to have tried to shoehorn too much into one movie and forgot about a story that flows and makes sense. It's riddled with plot holes, continuity, and pacing issues. Reactions by characters to events in film are completely off and missing is the tension that Alien and Bladerunner both had. The visuals were great and I intend to mine them for everything I can but the story failed to entertain me and only served to frustrate.

From the reviews here I thought I was going to hate it after my initial great anticipation. I ended up loving it. A family member who I watched it with who had not even seen Alien or Aliens before loved it also. Yes lots of potentional questions still left out there to decipher for yourself (part of the fun to me), but I think that was the intention. Still a great ride with lots to think about and discuss as we rode home from the movie.

Perhaps part of the problem is with the subtleness of some of the information? It's one of those movies that you almost need to watch twice to catch everything. I think back to watching No Country For Old Men the first time. Afterwards I was like, "Did he kill her or not? What is going to happen to the old deputy? What happened to the money? This is stupid" I re-watched the movie, caught all of the answers, and it's probably in my top-20 of all time movies now.

An example from Prometheus (!!!!SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!): (sorry never can remember how to hide text)
Spoiler:

I saw a post from someone on another forum moaning about why didn't Dr. Shaw wonder how she became prego? They apparently missed a single line from David asking if she and her boyfriend had sex recently. This plus knowing what happened to the boyfriend was enough to figure out what was coming for me (and apparently Dr. Shaw), but some missed the hint and went on a forum to berate the illogical response of Dr. Shaw not questioning how she had become begotten.

Other subtle clues throughout and their interpretations intrigued me - Religious references (it being Christmas during the discovery, an immaculate conception so-to-speak, what happens when you subtract the 2000 year age of the Engineer colony from the date in the movie and what it may mean) or more obvious classical mythology references (the big dude at the start being the namesake of the movie, not just the ship, especially when considering how the mythical Prometheus was punished). How about the gem of David looking like Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia? There is a ton in there to be appreciated and perhaps not so many things left to be figured out once you ponder and debate everything said/seen with a friend.

If you judge the movie only by the action sequences, what actually happens, and don't ponder the deeper meanings, then I agree it's mediocre.

I almost don't want a sequel for fear that the questions I've answered for myself will turn out to be quite wrong and something less interesting or fantastic (Jesus Space Jockey anyone?).

Believe it or not I may be going back for another viewing next week with my wife who hasn't seen it yet. I highly suggest IMAX 3D even though I'm not normally a 3D fan.

I just saw it, went and had a pint before the show, which the ticket wasn't much more, had the theater almost all to myself, and IT WAS AWESOME.

Then again I love sci-fi.
