OTU Only: Pronounce Uakye?

THIS THREAD inspired me to look up my T5 world assignment: I'm a Knight of the Third Imperium, from Uakye.

HERE is a bit about the world from the Traveller wiki. THIS and THIS are about a transport company based there.

It's a transport company based on a non-industrial world? Yet, Uakye City features an industrial park?

Well, besides that...how do you pronounce "Uakye"

Ah-kie

You-ack-yee

Wok-e-yee

Wack-ee

Something different?

I think I'm going with Wok-eye (rhymes with hawkeye), until I hear something better.

Ya-kie isn't bad, either (rhymes with jedi).

Pronounced as in "wacky"?

And presumably used as a adjective by comedians across the subsector...

Auk Eye <-- my preference
Waah-kee <-- if you're feeling ridiculous
Throat-warbler Mangrove <-- if you like Monty Python

Actually....I'm now thinking Wha-KIE. Rhymes with Jedi. Accent second syllable. "Wha" as in "what", without the "t". "Kie" rhymes with "sky".

I am a warrior of the Uakye (Wha-KIE), Knight of the Third Imperium. And, it is our duty, us Knights, to protect the realm by usurping that madman, Count Pendragonman, before he leads our world to total destruction.

I was born in a tank. I'm not a clone, and I am just as human as you are. I just don't have a father or mother. I don't have a family. From birth, I have been trained to fight...to fight for Count Pendragonman, the mad ruler of my world.

I have no name. I am designated "S4".

I am now a believer in the Resurrection. And so, I pledge my life to the Insurrection.

I am a Knight. I am a warrior. I am the blood of Uakye.

And, today, I fight for what is right.

Forever Uakye!

I may be mad, but I am also BRILLIANT! Mwaahahhahahahahahahahahahhaaaaa

Growing my troops in tanks avoids the whole messy "family" thing...

Oh, no! You'er the Count of Uakye?

I'm in trouble.:smirk:

(and, in the low language of the street, we natives pronounce it Ya-KIE, like Jedi, accent second syllable).

"One You-wack-key...Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha..."

*Thunder and lightening in the background*

"Two You-wack-key...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...."

*More thunder and lightening...*

LOL! That's hilarious.

See, our fearless leader, Count Pendragonman, in one of his mad fits, thought it would be neat if the name of our world were an anagram.

Before he came to power, the name of our world was Kayue.

But, that wasn't good enough for the Count. Nooooooooo. He had to mix up the letters....

You can imagine what he's done with our social security system, here on world.

The sad thing is, put to cadence, it became a popular march in the Imperial Marines, and confused the hell out of the Zhodani telepaths, who kept trying to figure out what it meant.

This incident, along with the feather-in-the-hat called macaroni Solomani issue, continue to plague planners at the Zhodani War College.

it's part of a test for aspiring imperial diplomants. they have to meet with a "representivitve" of Uakye, and have been given a text only briefing, with no guide on how to pronounce Uakye.

when they meet the "representivitve", no matter what pronounciation they choose, they will manage to offend the representivitve and must smooth things over as best they can......

the student diplomants hate that test........

but, for the record, i prefer oo-ack-key

"I don't know, but i've been told/
Alsan chicks are mighty cold!
But give them some steak and see!/
You'll be getting it for free!"

sorry, i couldn't resist, and i'm far much of a squaddie to think of of a clean one.....

LOL at this thread. Inspiring me to have a closer look at my various land grants.

My (serious) take would be:

EWE-ah-kie

("Kie" rhymes with "pie").

Uakye

Uakye

If the "U" is silent then Ah-Kie (rhymes with "pie") seems right

If you pronounce the "U" then the name becomes You-ah-Kie

If the "U" is soft then you get Who-Ah-Kie

If you like a combination (and joke names) then Wack-ee makes perfect sense

-- Uakye --

We are the ah-kie
It is for a mad-man that we live and die
For the world is my blood, and my blood is the earth
Where we tread, and crawl, and fly.

We are the ah-kie
Warriors of Pendragonman, the Count who lies
But, no more will our world be torn
To the last man, we blow our horns

And, it is towards Pendragonman that we now turn our knives.

Long live ah-kie!
