Robots and Synthetics in the Third Imperium

If nothing else, it shows that the Clone is considered an eligible heir.

So it's possible that Lucan II might be the mind of 50 YO Lucan I in a new apparently 20YO force-grown body, and named as heir and true-son, by a still living Lucan I... then "Updated" regularly to match Lucan I's mind...

At what point is there a risk that the updated Lucan I/II decides that he's got a better idea than the pattern original and wants to do its own thing? It's always a risk, and possibly greater when involving a personality that is egotistical to the point of psychopathy

The Moot's practical job is to convince the heirs not to do so.

Which is fair and effective and noble, until into the TNE/HT period when there isn't an effective Moot.

But I get your point. So the Moot is the arbiter in that case. So if the Moot is willing to call it, a clone could be elevated to the Iridium Throne. Not that I'm aware of any instances of it occurring, but that precedence opens things up for sector and subsector governors, or nobles of any level doesn't it? Is it the court that they'd have to answer to that would make the decision in their cases?

Nor is there an Imperium, either. By dissolving the Moot, Dulinor effectivey dissolved the Imperium.

The only court to which the moot answers is, indeed, itself. (Unlike the board's moot.)

I thought that level of memory transfer was tech 20.

Perhaps it's by brain transplant... but that's a little grim.

We know that chip encode is TL12... Imagine an emperor dictating his heir be chipped then having the huscarles force the heir to take the chip into socket...

At TL12, that means the mature chip tech is no more than TL15

No need for icky brain transplants or even wafer technology. Traveller 5.09 has an example on pg 96-97 indicates the "50 year old Lucan" scenario is QED at TL 15. The example is a 3 year difference between brainscan and scooped up DNA. Why not a 30 year difference?
I also suggest the "merging Lucans" scenario is technologically possible via the editing process and unscrupulous doctors. As noted elsewhere in detail, editing personalities can cause madness, but Lucan has been accused of worse.
A relict preserves memories and is an effective duplicate or replacement for the pattern.
For example, Duke Adawulf of Efate knew he was living a dangerous life when hostilities started in the Spinward Marches; he quite responsibly bought life insurance. In the last days of the enemy assault, Adawulf held off the enemy at the portico of his estate as his staff made their escape.
After several hours, he was killed when Zhodani artillery levelled the palace. His loyal butler gathered up a few scraps of the Duke, and after the war ended, notified the insurance company. About a year later, the Duke made his appeance at a party in his honor, but with no memories of the past three years.
Relicts have force-grown organic bodies, cloned brains, and implanted personalities.

and personalities (pg.523). The reference to genetic profile is referencing compatible sophonts. Clone implantation is permanent.
THE BASIC RULES OF RECORDED PERSONALITY
A Personality Can Be Recorded.
A Recorded Personality Can Be Edited.
A Recorded Personality Can Be Overlaid On The Same Genetic Profile, But It Degrades.
A Recorded Personality Can Be Implanted On the Original or its Clone.
A Recorded Personality Can Be Run On A Computer, But It Degrades.
A Person Can Monitor His Personality Running On A Computer.
Rarely, An Overlaid Recorded Personality Becomes Permanent (and Does Not Degrade).
