Sand Batteries and High Guard

At the risk of opening an entire can of worms on myself, I have a question about applying sand batteries in High Guard. I am hoping that Don has a clear answer, but I checked the errata and found no hope there.

My question is this: How many defensive batteries are required each round?

Does one battery of sand defend the ship again all attacks for a given round, or just those through one given "hex side", or just those attacks from one ship, or just one attack per sand battery?

These same questions apply for repulsors. Further, I am guessing that you resolve the number of missile penetrations of various screens then apply beam batteries to defeat the number of successful inbounds. Correct?

Once upon a time I had no such questions, but I have grown old and forgotten too much. My apologies for this.

Ironically, I just read this today.

Bk 5 Pg 40, last paragraph, states "Defensive weapons (sandcasters, repulsors and beam weapons used as missile defense) must be allocated against the hits of specific {offensive} batteries (emphasis mine)... etc.

So, because they are active defenses, each SC battery is allocated to a scored hit by the opponents specific offensive battery fire.
