Sell me on science skills in CT

Since this thread seems to have gained a second wind, I thought I might throw in my 2 cents.

I tend to use EDU at a Jack-of-all-Trades skill for knowledge. Just as JOT requires Referee discression in it's use but has the potential to do anything, EDU requires Referee discression but has the potential to know anything.

I assumed that IMTU all of the "Science" skills existed, but few were important to the game -there are probably people with Sales-3 hawking used starships, but they tend to be NPCs and unimportant to the adventure.

For the usefull Science skills, I tended to link them to one or more common CT skills (ie. Starship Engineering corresponds to Engineering). I allow the Science skill to function as double its level for "diagnostics" and half it's level for "repair". Starship Engineering 3 would make a heck of a chief engineer on a large starship, but might not be the best choice for a Free Trader.

Those are my thoughts,
thanks for listening.

I use EDU in a similar way - it covers the various "knowledge" skills, and the knowledge part of the various science skills. Science skills cover methodology, practical knowledge in that field and its applications.

For example, a pure theoritician might have high EDU but relatively low science skills.

A lab technician would have high sciencxe skills but not nescerily high EDU.

An active research scientist will need both high EDU and good science skills in his field.

Well, many moons later...

I received the last JTAS reprints book a few months ago, and decided to introduce the advanced scientist chargen from Challenge 25 IMTU. This includes a variety of science skills.
There is an expanded Scientist CharGen system? Now I'm intrigued... I thought of making such a career myself, but if I could get it from that reprint...

On the other hand, as most people don't have these reprint (or the Challenge issue itself), and since I'll ahve to shell out money to buy this... I am since thinking about creating my own Expanded scientist chargen system for CT.

There's a specific "Scientist" Career in Basic MT CharGen (I think also in TNE), and a specific "Scholar" career in T4. In fact, I've generated a few scientists/scholars - Note the engineer on the Show-Off Witch. So having an expanded version would sit well with me, even if I never use it for a campaign.

When did Black Globe Generator get banned?

T4 and MT don't have expanded Scientist careers IIRC; an expanded one would be useful.

I used this same approach to write some custom spell research rules for my AD&D game with major and minor milestones and uncertain distances between. The MT Ref's Companion research system was pretty amazing! I have to say, it is an elegant model of the domain it is trying to map out (research). Muchly recommended.

Definetly yes. A useful addition to that would be a way for Scientist PCs to be able to make minor, major and breakthrough discoveries, which is something (well, not the "Breakthrough" discoveries) from an MTCG computer program.
