I just had to bump this thread.

It reminds me to keep a level head when recieving praise about my ship designs from this august body.

For one particular campaign I had a small alliance of worlds whose navy was purposely designed to appear as any number of immense French ticklers. I played it straight, to see how long it would take the players to comment.

About 3 hours of play and 3 alien ships. After that they began ardently speculating on the details of the designs of ships they were going to encounter next.

The campaign was pretty much a Flesh Gordon sort of adventure.

I always thought the cover of Digest #20 was pretty blatant ... including the angled collar and slot in the top. (Not a clear picture on this link but all I could find at short notice.)
