Small Ship Traveller

I am starting a PBeM in my "Small Ship" TU based on Ken Picks Extended Book 2 system <http://www.freelancetraveller.com/features/shipyard/book2plus.html>

Players will be the crew/troops of a Type T naval corvette
<http://www.freelancetraveller.com/features/shipyard/classic/typet.html>
sent on a recon mission deep uncharted territory. Their mission? To investigate reports of an advanced alien starship.

The players come from the pocket empire of the Imperial Regency, which fled to this area of space after a devastating civil war. All the OTU major races are present in and around this area except that K'Kree and Hiver are not allowable PC races. Rules are CT with additions (which will be listed on the site when I get it up), however characters can be created with any CT derived system.

I am also planning (when the friggin books I ordered finally get here), to fully flesh out my TU, so that an economic analysis of a Small Ship empire can be carried out.

You might want to duplicate your post on the Recruiting Office forum to cast a slightly wider net for players.

Good luck!

Percentages.
Ships cost maintence, repairs, operation expenszes. All this is paid for by- what?
Consider a merchant. LEt's say a 1000 ton ship, delivers 500 tons of cargo, most of the rest is fuel tankage.

Do the math for building, maintaining, average repair costs over the life of the ship. Assume that it is useful for twice the morgage life.

Not a lot of profit as a common carrier, but some, if you are careful.

Do it for a 200 ton merchant. Not a good thing for common carrier duty, the costs tend to ooutstrip revenues generated. Cargo speculation is what small merchants do to survive. But that's not what makes cargo lines.

And fuel- ouch. Ships NEED refiners. Or they need to be owned by firms with their own fueling stations, near oceans, large fresh water sources, or gas giants. 200 ton merchants cannot afford to carry a refiner, there's just too little spare room as it is- but they really cannot afford to burn unrefined, and they cannot afford the refiner's fee.

Do the math. Study the results. And see what sort of society this dictates.
