I think it's a question of scaling, and establishing an ambiance; you'd have to give a reason why navies aren't pushing the boundaries on ship displacements.

I like the Clement Sector setting where ships over a certain size have a chance of the 'Zimm field' collapsing, a real deterrent to building large ships.

By amending this slightly so that larger ships are possible at higher TL's it's possible o convert the setting to the Traveller universe.

Kind Regards

David

I like the Clement Sector setting where ships over a certain size have a chance of the 'Zimm field' collapsing, a real deterrent to building large ships.

As mentioned, the side effects of this is the dominance of sub light ships in combat. Building large monitors in system to defend against smaller, jump (or whatever) capable ships.

This becomes an issue of whether smaller (for assorted definitions of "smaller") ships can be effective against larger ships.

You'll see infrastructure to support this, such as modular ships built out of pre-fab components that can readily transported to the destination system, only to be assembled there.

So, it's fine idea, but just have to consider the ramifications of such an effect.
