Snowstorm 2016

same thing in seattle. an inch of snow, and abandoned cars litter the roadside like toy cars in my kids' room and people trudging home like refugees ....

Really? Seattle! Wow. I'm from Chicago/Milwaukee/Gary sprawl. This makes no sense to me. I know people that had 12+ hour commutes because the city of Atlanta shutdown last year.

Seattle and Portland have about a week or three of real winter... and a month or two of "passes for winter"... they don't have much experience with it; they're kept very mild by the ocean...

This makes no sense to me.

I thought it was melodramatic too, but they really get into it. rain they can handle, but it only snows once every two or three years, so it's kinda special, or something ....

I grew up in Atlanta, yes that city is a nightmare when bad weather strikes. They don't have any winter weather equipment to treat the roads, and the people have no sense when dealing with the conditions. No wonder they showcased the TV series "The Walking Dead" in Atlanta, the Zombie Apocalypse had already struck.

Lucky we didn't get the worst of the possible forecast here in Lexington Kentucky I think we only got 8" of snow. Savoring coffee and cinnamon coffee cake while I reconnoiter the Hoth battlefield from my window

Austin Tx gets frozen stuff about once every 3-4 years and then it's likely to be an ice storm. local news shows cars doing 10 mph down a hill breaking loose and sliding for 100 yards before hitting another car, one lady even bailed out of her still moving car only to find she was still sliding just as fast as the car.

Atlanta had snow equipment they purchased. They just didn't use it.

The Mayor apologized, saying something about using the equipment after the snow fall is over. Some people had 18 hour commutes because of this drama.

My wife was not happy that i cancelled our plans last night but I just don't trust the Atlanta Metro approach to disasters. We had a few flakes today but no reason to bother when the people around us cannot handle anything.

:coffeegulp:

Ha, the weather here in New Zealand is close to the opposite* of what you guys are having in North America. It's set to be 29 °C today. :p

*I guess "the opposite" of a snowstorm would actually be a heat wave or something like that, which isn't the case here, but still.

today in the desert: may have to run my air conditioner on the way home.
Today scattered showers between Marin and San Jose, which meant dense patches of monsoon like rain with large patches of sunshine.

Half the time I had my wipers and lights on with the heater, the other half I had the sun roof open.

Schizophrenic weather :oo:

Quit rubbing it in ;)
california dreamin'
on such a winter's day ....
It's the whole reason I stay in the Bay Area and not move to Los Angeles (or anywhere else:) ).

Three weeks back, up here in Marin county, there was a massive freeze. My car was in a lot that's at sea level next to an estuary from SF Bay. Sea water, mind you, in mid California. When I woke up to get breakfast there was a very thick layer of frost covering everyone's car. It was like snow, it was that thick. Rarely do we get that kind of cold here, but mister Spanish Little Boy brings all kinds of weather strangeness with him.

I was looking around the Internet and found that Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, near the Appalachian Trail, got over 40 inches of snow.

DC Northern VA Snowfall

Dulles International got 29.3" officially, but in my neighborhood we got 30.8" unofficially. Schools and colleges closed thru Tuesday. Neighbors have decided to wait and see if state plows will get to our street today. If not we are going to have a block party tomorrow and dig out together.
In the meantime have been doing lots of RPG reading and gaming.

In northwestern Baltimore County, MD, we got 32" of snow in 36 hours. My little back street wasn't plowed until yesterday afternoon. We have front-in parking in front of our townhouses, so there was no place to put the snow when we dug out. Took me about 8-9 hours to dig out one car, carrying each shovelful of snow 8-15 steps to dump it.

So far here in Minnesota all we've got this year are about four "nuisance" snows, 1 - 3 inches. Usually by now we've had a buggerall snow or three. Of course, March is always dire around here, so our turn will come, no doubt

Yes we have had some of our worst weather in March.

Crazy! Its suppose to be in the mid 50s here at the end of the week :badger:
