I haven't played in about 12 to 14 years, but when I did ref a game, I allowed that characters with below average stats would be smart enough to stay safe at home. To simulate this, I allowed the first die of each stat roll to be an automatic 6 for every thing except socal status. To the survival rules I kept track of the total pips any roll was missed by as an accumulation of wounds. Each 10 wounds (And each roll of 2) became a major wound that had some lasting effect. I used the hit location chart for 2300 AD to allocate that damage. I also ignored the skills/level limits. (I had 1 year and a quarter of college of formal education, but my life experience adds far more skills than a real life application of that rule would allow. No way I am going to stop aquiring skills so why make my players stop?) I also argued that if I was in training, I had to learn something so I allowed an automatic skill if the assignment was training. The last modification was to assume that if I needed a particular skill to get a promotion (or I got a promotion that required me to have a skill I did not have, ie. trader's advanced generation forced department transfer) that I would focus on that area of training and automatically take that skill at the next opportunity to get a skill. I realize that this is not a "pure" attitude, but I sure had fun doing what I did.
