Star Wars: Rogue One

Just got back from seeing it (and I was paid to watch it).

Brilliant film. Great addition to the Star Wars franchise.

I will wait until more of you have seen it before discussing stuff in it though.

Haven't seen it, but I expect it to be SSDD Star Wars stuff. I doubt it brings anything in the way of new ideas or even scenery to the screen.

I thought it did a very good job of telling a story within the Star Wars universe - a bit like someone's rpg exploits rather than the demigods of the main movies.

It felt like the extended universe coming to life.

No plot armour in this one, and stormtroopers who can actually shoot straight.

I really enjoyed it and, funny enough, so did my wife. Don't get me wrong, she loves SF/F in general and specifically Star Wars but she's been critical of moves recently years. This one, she really enjoyed. We both had our criticisms of the movie (early scenes seemed rather disjointed, lack of plot development of one of the ensemble), but it was nice to see a movie in the SW universe that is really different.

oh there's plenty of plot armor. and speaking of armor, I still don't get why the st's bother to wear any, they should trade it all in for red shirts. when the droid was sniped squarely in the back of its "head" by a blaster RIFLE, and stylishly/elegantly turns and shoots an armored st dead with one shot from a PISTOL, I walked out.

If you think there is plot armour you should have stayed 'til the end...

by now I expect you have found out what I mean by that.

And let's face it, anything is better than stormtroopers being taken out by Ewoks :)

no thanks. the last four of this series have been atrocious, and I went to this against my better judgment, hoping that just maybe it would be a story rather than another ptsd fantasy excuse for bashing of the evil bad guys by the just and true. no more.

there is. this wasn't it.

I have to agree with flykiller... Star Wars is as beaten to death as Star Trek when it comes to movies. They're more like Star Trash these days.

How realistic is a battle scene with thousands of troops armed with energy weapons, grenades, explosives, and backed by huge armored vehicles and flying craft that clash like they're in Braveheart or some medieval Viking movie?

Rogue One was AWESOME! If you're a fan of Star Wars, you'll enjoy this movie.

If you have watched Star Wars Rebels at all, there are three things from Rebels in the movie. One was a 'if you blink, you missed it', and I missed it.

when the droid was sniped squarely in the back of its "head" by a blaster RIFLE, and stylishly/elegantly turns and shoots an armored st dead with one shot from a PISTOL, I walked out.

Well, it was actually the droid's shoulder.

I wish you could have enjoyed this. I had a great time.

I can say this: It may have lacked character development but somebody in production paid attention to some of the existing starship technical detail and background. In Rogue One the Empire is using Imperial I-class Star Destroyers just like in ANH, compared to the Imperial II-class seen from ESB onwards. The visual difference is in the bridge tower details.

At current ticket prices, I never walk out.

Might want to turn the Traveller ref subroutine off when dealing with space fantasy.

I saw it. I loved it.

And I agree that they did an awesome job of keeping things in sync with ANH. From Grand Moff Tarkin and Mon Mothma to the details of the starships to even having the same people as certain pilots (like Gold Leader). They really paid attention to the details.

And it is nice to see that between this and Rebels they are actually bringing back some of my favorite stuff from the Extended Universe (Thrawn!!!!)

I appreciated that the Easter Eggs and homages weren't thrown in our faces JJ-like, instead they were more subtlety woven in. There were bits from all the various SW movies, games, and cartoons. It was fun picking them out instead of having them forced on me.

love fantasy settings, despise plot-serving interventions.

yes they did, superior effort there. r2d2 and c3po were just thrown in for no reason though, that was distracting.

rrrrrr ....

I wish you could have enjoyed this.

me too, wanted to, but each one makes me cringe more than the last.

did enjoy the scenery, whoever is in charge of visualizing the setting is doing a good job. if they make any more I'll wait until I see them in the $5 bin and watch them with the sound turned off.
