T5 - The Verdict

Thank you Aramis. I couldn't agree more. T5 IS VERY PLAYABLE!!

One of the core books I ordered arrived today. Obviously I haven't read it yet.
But I have read the positive stuff on here and I know Don has been guiding a few folks through it over on G+ so of course it's playable and we (my kids and I) WILL be playing it this summer.
Bravo Marc, Don, Rob and all the contributors to this project. I salute you.

Well Mechascorpio, putting up comments that are negative to the system from the get go, ultimately brings discredit to T5.

Puh-lease. This is CotI. You think anyone (other than you, it seems) cares what I have to say about the book? I'm not even allowed to express my opinion of it.

You, on the other hand, have all the freedom to describe it as "an essential addition for ANY Traveller fan", to say that "Everyone who got a book received a CDROM" (untrue), and telling everyone to ignore those who don't like it because they feel "Classic to be the only version they will play".

So don't worry about T5. Your cheerleading it as "one of the greatest SciFi RPG games ever made" more than offsets my "discrediting" it, and it will do fine on its own. After all, it's already paid for, and I helped make that happen despite my supposed agenda. Perhaps you should take your own advice and ignore me.

I have to say spaceresearcher sounds like Marc, is that you Marc?

:oo:

So, are you honestly of the opinion that the only one that could possibly agree with aramis, or support t5 is Marc ? Really ?

Welll.....I am Marc, too.

(cue sparticus theme music)

I AM MARC !

(this should make getting my desired canon changes in place a lot easier... :D)

I am glad there is some humor coming back into this thread it was getting a bit crucified.

No problem mechascorpio. Also I did later specify 'Kickstarter' on the CDROM issue and that anyone who backed at the book level got a CDROM. That is true. As for after sales, I wasn't even aware of all the extra purchasing options until I read it on a couple of the forums here.
As for ignore you, your a fellow Traveller and as you addressed me, I simply responded. I thank you for your input in any case.

Well it did seem like such an emphatic pronouncement that it seemed like a fairly good supposition.

;)
Actually, not really.
The fact that some people have been and still are playing T5 means that the game must be playable. So the emphatic pronouncement is probably due to the self-evident nature of the observation rather than any appeal to authority.

I still prefer Classic Traveller and The Traveller Book as MY rules of choice, but I have yet to find any version 'unplayable'. Heck, I even like FF&S, which is as not-CT as it gets.

[m;]As a practical matter, COTI is the official site of FFE and T5 is the latest release by FFE.

Constructive criticism is welcome.

Non-constructive criticism is tolerated.

Insulting the character of the site owner is both 'bad form' and a violation of several board rules.[/m;]

Let's not cross any lines, and let's treat everyone with respect.

So the real final verdict is: 50/50. Some like it, some don't, some just like parts. Sounds pretty much like every new version of Traveller that's ever been released.

Still I get the serious point that for 'new' fans, if other fellow fans are finding issues that could detract from that very important group of individuals then that's definately something that should be addressed. Still with an experienced Traveller player to teach them, this issue could be rectified on some level.

That said, is Traveller more of a thinking persons game which requires an investment of time that perhaps the casual 'gee that looks cool' style of player may not be willing to spend getting to know it?

"Playable" is COMPLETELY subjective. Some people find Russian roulette "playable" (not to compare the two of course). What WILL tell are sales stats (minus the kickstarter customers) over the next year or so.

I don't get it? Did I come across as insulting?

Truer word have never been spoken on this forum...

I imagine many who frequent this forum can get something out of T5, if not play it with some adjustments.

Will a players book clear some things up? I definitely think so.

Will T5 attract new players? Time will tell...

In all fairness I haven't read where anyone on this forum claims to be playing it straight from the book.

There is a lot to dislike about T5 as presented in the first edition. There is a lot between the covers that is pretty good.

I'm sure many here will disagree with me, but, I see a lot of CT on steroids in T5. T5 is not CT but it enhances CT very well. I'm a CT fan and not so familiar with other Traveller versions but I suspect there is a lot in T5 that will enhance those other versions as well.

Knowing what T5 is would I have spent $100.00 on it? Probably not, but now that I have I will pull a lot out of it and enjoy the parts I do like.

I believe that it will be 'parted out'. I don't think a large % of trav GM's will be switching to T5 stand alone.

Once again, let me explain I have not seen T5, so I speak in general terms:

As from any versión. I even took something from TNE, even while being among the "torches and pitchforks" mob, and from T4, even if it disappointed me.

In all fairness I haven't read where anyone on this forum claims to be playing it straight from the book.

Are you talking about T5 or about any Traveller version? Or just about RPG in general?

I guess not many people play any RPG straight by the book (and most, if not all, RPGs tell in the rules that they are mostly gidelines, I guess expecting most referees will house rule or at least adapt them somewhat).

When CT first came out friends and I played it straight...for awhile. I'm not allowed to say T5 is "unplayable" so I won't. T5 is playable; CT is far more playable.
