The real ACR

I always felt what set the ACR off from assault rifles was its ability to defeat body armor. That meant, IMHO, APDS was the only real ACR ammo. The latest generation of military rifles (G11, Tavor, FN2000, etc) look like ACRs, but they are really just assault rifles dressed by Fredericks of Hollywood.
Yeah, but there are REALLY GOOD Assault Rifles; the new "dressing" weights less than the old metal, and is far less fragile than the old plastic. Accuracy, argonomics and relyability have also been improved. A soldier friend of mine had some training experience with the newly-introduced Tavor TAR-21; he said it took time to adapt to it (mainly due to it being the first bullpup rifle in wide Israeli military use), but once you get familiar with it, it's a really good gun.

And yes, ACRs should have ACR ammo and improve integral low-light/IR/laser sights (integrated, durable and light).

2-4601,
What is "argonomics"? Is it a design philosophy that tries to minimize the amount of time the soldier spends yelling, "Aaarrrggghh!!!"? ;)

I'm registering that as a "keyboard kill", even though I just managed to choke it back in order to avoid spraying cola over my keyboard!

FN2000 reportedly has good ergometrics, but a lousy trigger (a common problem with bullpups). And it may not be all that reliable.

The buzz on the Tavor is all good. But a bullpup is still a bullpup. :(

I've seen so many cool weapons here that I had to toss my own in. I just couldn't resist.

It's a rifle, sort of.

It looks like it came straight out of a high-tech Shadowrun campaign. (So it sort of fits in with the high-tech take of weapons currently underway.)

It's man-portable, as the photo clearly shows (even if it can't really be fired realistically while being carried . . . )

It was made in the mid 1940s.

You may have already guessed it, the: Lahti 20mm Anti-Tank Rifle

There used to be better photos on the web, but they appear to have moved on.

THATS a rifle, Chris !!

Sort of...

Yeow. There truly is someone for everyone. I am so glad this adorable hunk and his Lahti are so happy together! I feel safer already knowing that there is a 20mm Cannon out there to protect me from all those abandoned car bodies!

The Lahti was the only ATR that was actually worth a crap against armor. They very quickly were useful against light armor only and not tanks. The only other Anti-Armor rifle, or sub-20mm round that is worth a darn against light armor is still in use. One of my favorite toys the M2HB. (It was around before the Lahti and is still in service. (1918 - Present.

Personal defense of course ;)

You know, like in case Earth is invaded by man-eating giant bugs from outer-space and they land in this guys backyard

There's some as have toys like this that worry me and some that don't. This guy doesn't set off my trusty Robbie unit.

I saw a Lahti once, thirty years ago. It was in the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division museum in a display of things taken from the Viet Cong.

The CIA provided Lahtis to anti-Castro guerillas in the early 1960s. They used them to arm high speed ("Cigarette") boats.

...British rifle used during the Zulu wars...

Martini-Henry .450
I guess this should be a quote too:

"It's a miracle, sir."
"Yes, a Martini-Henry four-five calibre miracle"
- Zulu.
:)

God bless Colour Sergeant Bourne, and all his brethren.

Bourne was the highest ranked survivor not to be decorated. I suppose he was just doing his duty!

IIRC Bourne was the youngest Color Sergeant in the Regiment, not the old veteran in the movie.

An ambitious and able man. IIRC Pvt Hook went on to be Sergeant Major.
