Those Silly Traveller Things

Ever had those thoughts or moments relating to Traveller where you're just tickled pink? Where the concept at hand is just so silly that, although it would never come up in a game or actually work with the actual Traveller lore, it just seems so funny that you secretly wish your players would try this?

Or maybe it did come up in your game, and it gabe your group a good chuckle. If there isn't another active thread for this, feel free to place your thoughts and stories here.

And just to get the ball rolling....

The dirtiest trick in the book of Vargr Infighting: Pin the opponent down and rub their belly while saying "who's a good boy, who's a good boy, yes you are, yes you are!" (Or whatever else you might say to a dog you're pampering in a similar way.) And then just watch him lose all dignity as he squirms and pants and wimpers ineffectually like a tame little pup.

Wouldn't work for a number of obvious reasons, but it makes a silly mental image.

In a previous campaign, the group had to get over a high wall on Regina. Using an air raft wasn't practical as it was too big, grav belts were too expensive and not everyone in the group could use one so in the end the choice was down to everyone either buying a load of MegaBoing grav pogo sticks or getting a grav lawn mower, which could go unnoticed.

"Vargr Take-Out" which is basically raw or very, very rare meat on a stick. Essentially shishkabob's a street food.

I made it up on lark in the middle of a game, and it's become a shtick in game, after game, after game. Heck, it now comes up in games without Vargr - one character decided to use that as a brand name in a cyberpunk game for a food business.

D.

I first read it in GURPS: Traveller Behind The Claw, but the fast food restaurant chain Astroburgers will forever have a place in my heart. It is so bizarre that it is easily believeable.

I had a light-bulb moment when writing up Tavonni's Vargr-owned long-distance grav bus company, "G-Hound"...

A staple of the Domain of Deneb IMTU is the Dead Spacer Bar -it's a chain of bars catering to Scouts and Marines - Grey on the left, Maroon on the right, yellow in the middle. Sign outside is (where not prohibited by law) the skeletonized or vacuum desiccated remains of a spacer in his vacc suit.

These places are notoriously rough, and NEVER call the MP's (tho' the neighbors might). Usually in the extrality zone.

Decorations usually involve the more heroic sides of both services. Promotion Parties and decoration parties get BOGO discounts on beverages.

Food varies from lame but free buffet to really good "greasy spoon" type.

I enjoyed BITS mad company; Famille Spofulam, especially MegaBoing...the orbit rated grav pogo stick. I introduced it into my campaign incrementally...first with an advert on a starport notice board, then as the characters were walking down a street they'd see some future-hipster drop from the sky on a grav pogo stick with an accompanying "BOING" from the stick's sound card. Finally, one of the players gave in to temptation and tried a group pogo jump from a Ship's Boat in orbit. As he hurtled through the atmosphere and the sky, wearing a vacc suit and holding a pogo stick he pondered how stupid he must look. Had me and the group creasing up.
