:alpha:Spinward pirates continue to thumb their noses at the Imperium, hijacking several more ships, and destroying the newly-commisioned cruise liner Freedom of Space, with all hands lost earlier this week. Just as the cheers were dying down for the daring rescue of Capt. Drachir by Imperial Marines that left three pirates dead, spinward pirates swooped down on more victims. This time they struck along the coreward end of the Regina Spur.

:alpha:The pirates have now seized four ships since the dramatic rescue of merchant Captain Drachir, who was taken hostage during a failed hijacking attempt. Pirate Captain Illip Richar, one of several pirates captured during that rescue is in custody of the Imperial Navy enroute to Imperial Detention Facility 17 at Pixie/Regina.

:alpha:Archduke Norris said on 009-1111 that he was determined to defeat piracy and capture the entire pirate armada and has dispatched several battlecruisers into the Regina Spur of the Spinward Main to patrol the area. "I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region and to achieve that goal, we're going to have to continue to work to prevent future attacks," the Archduke said.

:alpha: Corsair activity has subsided due to increased patrols along the Imperial border. IN spokespersons cites the efforts of the IN's anti-piracy operations task force led by Fleet Captain Chalak Daun. Reports of internecine fighting along the Vargr frontier have reached new heights, and it is speculated the recent wave of Vargr refugees to Denebian border worlds may have been precipitated by various Vargr factions waring with one another as a result of the crackdown.

:alpha: An expose on Maffer Enterprises as a brokerage firm for legitimate mercenary units has been denounced by a plethora of private security firms, citing the report to be shoddy and full of half truths. Maffer Enterprises, though not a security firm itself, has been the subject of many investigations for its hand in "head hunting the right army for the right war". Maffer has been accused of being the middle-man between private industry and world governments in suppressing popular uprisings. Maffer public relations has refused comment, and specifically denied to comment on the recent turmoil in Vargr space.

:alpha: Word reached the subsector capital today of a coup on Quiru (2321 B365300-8). That world had been ruled since 1106 by a military junta put in place by a disgruntled mercenary unit. Finding themselves unpaid after winning a brief civil war, the company-sized unit had allied with their previous opponents, overthrew their previous employers, and imposed a new government. Because the new government quickly saw to a more efficient operation of the port, it was decided that Imperial pressure should not be brought to bare.

:alpha: The crew of a detached duty scout arriving at the IISS base at Resten (2323 B310100-B) that they and the few other vessels at the Quiru Downport had been boarded briefly by security troops on 098 to prevent any possibility of their departure. The occupation of their scout/courier lasted less than a standard day while the crew noted occasional periods of gunfire in the settlement abutting the port. Departure clearances were granted starting at local noon on 099 with all outstanding port fees waived. It was also reported that, from among the briefly occupied vessels, the subsidized trader Tawahiri Siren was retained by the new government in order to transport a number of recently designated undesirables off-world.

:alpha: A duchy spokesman contacted by this office said no official comments would be forthcoming at this time but that the coup seemed to have employed minimal violence. When asked about the seeming complicity by the duchy's SPA ministry in the coup, the spokesman had no comment and ended the interview.

:alpha: on 45-1111 Noted privateer D.P. Quint, master of the Type R2 Century Chicken, engaged pirates, proceeding to storm, board, and deliver to the admiralty board for trial, the raider which attacked them. The pirates, a crew of 12, have confessed before local courts, and are being bound over for Imperial Trial on Regina.
:alpha: Pirate Captain Arsen Hargrave was interviewed, stating, "If I'd known who I was raiding, I'd have run. But that ol' pirate Quint played us in like a fine fiddle. Made like he was gonna surrender. Made it look like we'd taken out his MD. And, as we docked, all hell broke loose." Hargrave notes his own history with Quint goes back some 20 years, when Quint was a rating aboard a raider along side him in Vland Sector. "He was downright mean back then. I worked my way up the ship; Quint went on a prize from some vargr for the skipper, and, well, next thing I know, he's being hunted by the Kforzung, and a dozen pirate havens in Vland."

:alpha: Captain Quint left the Wypoc system on 51-1111, just ahead of a request for extradition to Psyadi for unspecified local capital crimes.

Grote/Glisten (1731 A400404-B)
Date: 257 - 1114

:alpha: The primary mass driver orbiting this gas giant moon, Flinger Alpha, was destroyed by a massive internal explosion today. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. The death toll from the disaster currently stands at 25 which includes all personnel aboard plus fatalities at a nearby container facility and cargo shuttle. The amount of debris both in orbit and relatively nearby has caused system TRAFCON to issue restrictive "Yellow" vector guidelines for vessels approaching and leaving Grote's high and down ports.

:alpha: Flinger Alpha was used to move payloads between Grote, the other moons of Godzilla, and both of the system's planetoid belts making it an important part of local economy. Jan-Haakon Mattiason, owner of the economic forecasting firm Mattiason Associates, told this office that the economic consequences of the loss will be substantial. The office of the Archon for Clan Addakkumak, the primary shareholder in DiGroat Holdings the firm which operated the mass driver, issued a statement promising a "complete and rapid" investigation into the causes of the explosion and also asked for assistance from both the duchy SPA and Imperial Port Warden. Both DiGroat and SPA assets are already tackling the orbiting debris left by the explosion while a team has been dispatched to the site where most of the mass driver impacted on the moon's surface.

:alpha: In a related story, the Border Worlds Navy heavy cruiser Erkenbrand had left orbit only an hour prior to the explosion for a shakedown cruise after a lengthy overhaul at Herreshoff Yards. The SPA's naval liaison officer stated that the cruiser was never in any danger and the shakedown cruise will continue as planned.

Regina/Regina (1910 A788899-C) 014-1111

:alpha: The chief executive of Samimakhidu has warned he is prepared to cancel production of the company's T2400 military transport. Daamu Eddek told TNS representatives that he would consider ending the program if Regina failed to cough up more credits. "We cannot complete the development of this starship without a significant financial contribution," he said. Delays to the T2400 project have already increased its budget by 25%. The project is now BCr 50 over its initial budget as a result of armor and jump-drive problems. The seven Marches systems that have ordered the ship will decide by day 31 whether to pay more.

:alpha: Seven star systems - Regina, Rhylanor, Efate, Lunion, Vilis, Garda-Vilis and Frenzie - have ordered 180 T2400 starships in total between them. Under contracts signed ahead of the start of the program six years ago, Samimakhidu has agreed to sell them the ships for a fixed price. "We made a big mistake when we entered into contracts for this starship six or seven years ago," Mr. Eddek said, speaking to TNAS Business Report. "If you make mistakes don't repeat them. We should not again take a decision which would lead us to further problems in the years to come." However, he added that the final decision on whether to scrap the project would be the decision of the whole board at Samimakhidu's parent company GSbAG.

:alpha: The T2400, which was designed to transport troops and equipment, is set to replace aging military cargo carriers in several colonial space forces. It had been due to go into service last year, but will not take to the stars until 1113 at the earliest. The delay led to Extolay cancelling an order for eight ships. There is a split between those worlds who want the starship built and in use quickly, notably Vilis and Frenzie, and those who would prefer to proceed more slowly to spread the cost, in particular Lunion. Ditching the T2400 would cost GSbAG some BCr 57 in advance payments - more than double the BCr 24 it has already set aside to cover losses it expects to incur from the project. There is every chance such losses could rise further, so analysts say Mr. Eddek's warning is more than just posturing aimed at putting pressure on local governments. "There will come a point where it is better for GSbAG to simply walk away," said Regina aerospace analyst Jusan Lirba. Doing so would severely damage Samimakhidu's reputation and boost arch rival Ling Standard, which has seen the order book for its T2400 rival, the Mx71, swell.

:alpha: Known philanthropist Hava-d'nou, has been officially pronounced dead after vanishing into the Vargr extents during the conflict against coalition forces comprised of Zhodani and various Vargr factions, the armistice of which was signed last year. Hava is known for his generosity across all racial lines, citing basic sophont and sentient philosophies as a source of his inspiration. Hava's wealth is a source of controversy, having wreaped untold riches through mining, arms research, shipping and other industries to rival Ling and Susag and a number of megacorporations, he unofficialy retired to help share his good fortune with "the rest of the galaxy". His whereabouts are unknown, but rumors abound of a private crusade to help a poor besieged Vargr state whose population is known to have special ties with the lost socialite.

:alpha: A post war incursion of Consular Guards is believed to be responsible for an explosion at the IN's far orbit fueling station, off limits to all but naval traffic and personnel. Unconfirmed first hand reports tell of clam shell armored men barely visible in the maintenance area under the fuel vats and near the pumps. Civilian staff have been ordered to not to talk under pain of imprisonment, but sources cite witnesses as saying "they appeared out of nowhere, ran into the works, shots were fired, then when they emerged again they glowed a funny blue color and vanished". The individuals giving this report refused to give their names, and IN security is investigating while trying to keep a lid on this development.

:alpha: A Dzagash Class strike carrier of Vargr origin was found drifting around the oort cloud by a detachment of duchy flotilla of system defense boats from the local naval guard station. The Dzagash Class carrier is a design found and employed by only the most wealthy of Vargr states. Her entire compliment of some 35 wolf hound class interceptors and 15 Pack Hunter class strike craft were either missing or destroyed. The entire crew is said to have been killed without mercy, and reports of K'Kree corpses found floating in and around the hulk are as yet unconfirmed.

:alpha: The IISS Communications Branch had eggs for breakfast today. On their face that is. Officials are at a loss to explain the breach of security that allowed spammers to access the X-Net and insert an unknown number of possibly dangerous messages for general broadcast and upload.

:alpha:Speaking on assurances of anonymity a local source confided "At this time we don't know exactly where the messages originated but they appear to have been inserted into the X-Net at Roup (2007 C77A9A9-7) where a security routine had failed. Now they have us manually scrubbing the whole system and I can tell you those back on Roup who missed it are in for it. There's no telling how far this might spread."

:alpha: Unfortunately the messages were passed on to the waiting X-Boats before they were reported locally. And the potential damage to ship's computers that downloaded the messages and left the system before the danger was detected and steps were taken to warn users is unknown. The IN has dispatched fast couriers to jump ahead of the X-Boats and hope to stop it spreading much further. Our own copies of several of the messages secured before they were deleted are non-Galangic (they are in a language local to Roup) and seem innocent enough if annoying and nonsensical when translated, though we haven't attempted to run the embedded data. All users are advised, both by this reporter and the IISS Communications Branch to NOT reply to any strange messages nor run any embedded data. The IISS Communications Branch requests (read requires) all users to immediately report any suspicious messages to the nearest Imperial Base or asset.

:alpha: Leading Bevyan opposition figure Dirdar Larukish has said he remains defiant despite death threats, and that he and his family are "prepared for any disaster". He also accused Verhat, the seat of government on Bevy, of suppressing people in the name of ideology. Mr. Larukish, who stood in the disputed presidential elections, also said he survived an attack last week when an armored speeder he was in was fired on.

:alpha: Meanwhile, Bevy's top prosecutor called for "strong action" against those behind the "post-election sedition". Rel Iawan said calls by some hardline ministers to put opposition leaders on trial should be answered, Bevy's Binsa news agency reported. President Rarooblaneglid claimed victory in the vote, but opposition leaders said the election was rigged. The election led to a series of city protests and crackdowns.

:alpha: The Bevyan protest movement has developed into the biggest challenge to the government since the revolution in 1080. Tens of thousands of people have been arrested or killed. Mr. Larukish and others have faced increasing pressure from the authorities, with some hardliners labelling them as "chalten" - enemies of the state who can be sentenced to death under Bevy's laws. "We were not aware that reclaiming your vote and protesting against political robbery is equal to being corrupt and chalten in these gentlemen's eyes," Mr. Larukish said.

:alpha: The slow disintegration of the nation of Craxi took another substantial step forward this week when the breakaway region of Ogigia held elections for a national assembly and a long promised Craxin offensive set to kick off when the Ogigian polls opened failed to appear. Instead, Auditor Keresos, Craxi's sole remaining legal arbiter, spoke for over three hours from his bench at the Central Courts concerning political and social issues without mentioning Ogigia once. Many observers believe widespread recognition of the new nation will be delayed thanks to infighting within the planet's several power blocs. Several non-aligned nations have already sent observers to Tanase, the new nation's capital, however.

:alpha: The Ogigian elections over, the biggest crisis now facing Auditor Keresos and Craxi is the sputtering war in Sisak province. Attacks by militias linked to both Craxin loyalists and several Sisak factions have led to the withdrawal of peacekeepers from the Western Treaty Organization and no other bloc seems willing to take up the task. There has been an increase in fighting already and widespread combat will surely begin once the rainy season passes.

:alpha: Speaking anonymously, a`senior member of the Imperial Observation Mission said "Sisak is only the beginning and the troubles will greatly effect more than Craxi. Keresos has lost nearly all of the north and east, refugees have already destabilized the neighboring nations of Obregon and Epave, and, with the withdrawal of the WTO, none of the planetary power blocs will allow another to intervene." They went on to say that numbers and types of mercenary units on planet is very troubling. "There's a PADS unit with mobile launchers in Giresun," they elaborated. "Giresun is a hemisphere away from the starport and lacks any shuttleports, so what does that nation need a planetary aerospace defense system for?"

Paya/Aramis 2509

:alpha:Crisis was averted today on Paya when the Imperial Navy instituted Operation Turnabout to redirect an asteroid on an impact trajectory with the planet. With the help of the Imperial Naval Starship Thunder Strike, a Destroyer assigned to the Naval Base, the asteroid is now in an orbit which will take it directly into the star of the system.

:alpha:Fearing a repeat of an impact in 1075, the request to the Imperial Navy for help was made almost a year ago. The crew has been training for this event ever since.

:alpha:Wanden Skoo, an administrator of Paya declared a planetary holiday honoring the Captain and Crew of the INS Thunder Strike as world heroes. Representative Skoo was overheard saying, "Let the Zilan Wine flow!" TAS declares Paya an Amber Zone for the duration of the celebration.

Burtson/Trin's Veil (2534 C462667-8)
Date: 002 - 1119

:alpha: The Seneschal's Office here announced an additional 10,000 hectares of vineyards were established in the last two planetary years as this colony world's reputation for viticulture continues to grow. Already well positioned on two major trade routes which are serviced by a farport, wines have provided Burtson with luxury export goods apart from it's usual agricultural products. Demand for Burtson wines on worlds like Aki, Trin, Dodds, and Glisten has significantly impacted the planetary economy.

:alpha: Burtson was originally settled by Squanine/Trin's Veil (2536 A300550-B) during the mid 700s and is still governed as a personal possession of the Marquis of Squanine. The colony and it's economy are tightly planned with emphasis on agricultural self sufficiency and basic exports. Prior to the discovery of Burtson's wines, the planet's primary exports had been processed foodstuffs such as military rations. Wines exports had been carried primairly by independent shippers as late as two decades ago, but nearly all exports now are handled by a consortium which includes Makhidkarun.

:alpha: In order that quality and innovation within the industry is maintained, smaller vintners are encouraged to circumvent the official consortium by participating in an annual judging and auction. A Toljanic Zlahtina vintage from the Tuu region has taken both top honors and top bids for the last three years. Individual exporters and even small trading vessels have made it a point to visit Burtson for this trade expo.

:alpha: Order is slowly being restored in the landlocked nation of Mazama after a total collapse of civil authority there. Troops from the neighboring coastal nation of Djerba bolstered by an Imperial Marine line company have occupied Mazama's sole city and most of the market towns. The occupying forces have so far reported only light casualties and no deaths in their ranks. Unconfirmed reports place the number of deaths among the local population at between 1,700 and 2,000, most of which occurred before the intervention took place.

:alpha: Situated in the Beta Continent highlands, Mazama is one of the few remaining nations created by Clan Hardretter in the immediate aftermath of the planet's reservation status being lifted. After Clan Hardretter's failure to form a planetary state, Mazama became a "hermit state" and remained such for decades. Recent liberalization of the nation's economy did not include basic monetary controls and Mazama became a widely known center for money laundering. Several large pyramid investment schemes endorsed by various officials ensnared two-thirds of the population. When those schemes ultimately failed, street protests became widespread armed rioting which toppled the government within a week.

:alpha: Although order has been essentially restored, several persons of interest have disappeared including the nation's last finance minister, central police commander, and chief executive. Marshal Dilip Bakiyev with the Imperial Ministry of Justice told this office that there are credible leads indicating that some of those individuals have left Marastan with the help of a party or parties unknown. "These people are wanted for questioning by the Imperium," Bakiyev explained. "No amount of money will prevent their being apprehended for that goal and anyone assisting them will find our offices interested in them too."

:alpha: General Products LIC has has advised of an urgent recall of Lanthanum jump coils from Batch No. 872C-54ER-005-1115.

:alpha: The recall has been initiated because of possible contamination of the Lanthanum by other rare earth elements. Owners of vehicles with these components should report to a class A starport at the next available opportunity for replacement components. Lanthanum is an essential component of jump drives, directing the vast energy flows necessary to enter jump. The contamination has the potential to interfere with the energy flows and result in a misjump.

:alpha: A spokeperson for General Products stated that the recall was merely precautionary and no adverse incidents had been recorded. This latest recall is another event in the series of problems that General Products has experienced in its starship industries quality control servcies.

:alpha: Reports of the discovery of such documents in the Confederation archives on Roget/Darrian (Spinward Marches 0427) have been circulating in academic circles since around 1114 and many believe that the government is keeping them secret in contravention of the Free Flow of Information principle of the Confederation charter. :alpha: An ugly riot broke out yesterday in the ancient city of Ganemir on Vanejen. A tourist from Rhylanor took a shortcut through the city’s back streets and inadvertently stumbled into a local religious ceremony, disrupting the ritual. The tourist fled, pursued by a howling mob intent on tearing him apart for his sacrilege.

:alpha: The tourist took refuge with a small group of Imperial ex-servicemen who quickly barricaded themselves in a small sturdy building and opened fire on the mob, which pressed its attack with such fury that 43 were killed and 14 wounded before it broke.

:alpha: News of the incident ran through the city like wildfire and angry mobs roamed the streets searching for the offending strangers. It appears that they had managed to leave the city in the initial confusion and their current whereabouts is not known. However, an unknown number of visitors to Ganemir, mostly from other Vanejan cities, were killed before the riot petered out after nightfall.

:alpha: In a dispatch from Pandrin/Uthe (Gvurrdon 2240) dated 350-1119, Oberlindes Lines reports that on 336-1119, its 3,000 T freighter Samarkand was attacked in the Scangen/Firgr system (Gvurrdon 2937) by ships belonging to the Vargr corsair band called the Ethueng and sustained heavy damage before the attack was beaten off. The Samarkand managed to jump to Triad/Firgr (Gvurrdon 2738) where she is presently undergoing emergency repairs at the Imperial naval base there, but she will have to return to Efate for more repairs and will be out of commission for several months.

:alpha: The Ethueng band formerly belonged to the better-known Kforuzeng corsairs but split off in 1115 and took over that band’s protection duties for Tukera Lines. The relationship between the Ethueng and Tukera has been the subject of much acrimonious speculation. The Ethueng prey on Imperial traders in Vargr space who are competing with Tukera, particularly Oberlindes, but Tukera disclaims all knowledge of these attacks, and insists that they only pay the Ethueng to protect their own ships, not to attack those of their rivals.
