traveller dice

i read in the reprint of jtas that there was a plan to make traveller dice . i have since become unnerved , jittery and have a tendency to foam at the mouth . does anyone know if these were ever made ? MORE IMPORTANTLY : does anyone know if anyone makes them now , or where i could get them made without ordering 1000 ? i'm a classic player so 6 siders are all i need . NEED .

would it be worth getting some made up to sell on travellerrpg page ?
i would order two sets of polyhedrals just to get two sixers ..................( gibber ...drool ....foam......)

I guy I used to game with back in the 70's had a set of traveller dice. Small back D6's with red pips.

I have wanted a set ever since. I have tried in vain to find them, so I made my owe. I took Black D6's with white pips and little red model paint. Not as good as the real thing though.

If you find a source be sure to post it.

Back in the days of T4 (c. 1996) I bought a brick of 12 black dice with red pips. They were very easy to find at the FLGS and seemed to be one of the more popular color combos. Here's a link to the Chessex page for what I bought.

Also noteworthy are the "Traveller Dice" that show up on ebay from time to time, usually sold by Marc Miller. These are black dice with red numbers inside of white Imperial Sunbursts and were manufactured in small quantity in the 80s (by, I believe, Lou Zocchi/Gamescience). Aha, here's a picture from travellerbibliography.org!

Marc Miller occasionally sells a set on ebay. They go for like $15. However, I've been outbid twice so far...

I did win Marc's auction for an MT Ref's Companion, and when I got the parcel there were some kewl little goodies in there, including a CCG-ish "Marc Miller card" for some kind of industry insider card game, organized by Flying Buffalo at Gen Con, I believe.

Opening bids for this card start at a mere MCr 25, btw.

If you go to GENCON this year look up Lou Zochie's booth. He has had them in the past (like last year).

For grins and gigles also get his 5 and 7 sided dice as well

. Can't have too many dice.

I have a set of the 6-sided dice with the white Imperial sunbursts. I bought them back in the 80s at a gaming store.

I wish now I had just put them away intact as collectors items. The sunbursts and numbers quickly began to fade from use. And I didn't use them that much -- it was just from rubbing against the dice bag and other dice in the bag, I guess.

I'll second this warning. I had a set of these as well, and if you aren't exceedingly careful, you'll wind up with blank black dice very quickly. Though, I imagine, they'd work well if you're the GM...much easier to fudge your rolls. Not that I advocate that mind you.

I can't speak to the specifics of the Traveller black & red dice (though I think the Armory used to sell them, before they merged with Alliance and stopped selling direct). However, one thing that many years of playing ASL has given me is an appreciation for good 6-siders. And a nice supply of hotel water glasses for rolling them in. ;)

If you want a set of very high-quality, long-lasting dice, hunt around in your yellow pages (or local equivalent) for a gaming supplies seller and look into a set of casino-quality dice. They aren't cheap but they're perfectly balanced, very substantial and durable, and amazingly quiet. Six-siders only, though.

I have casino dice, and want more, though lately, with a Pocket PC, I have a die randomizer. It's always good to have dice though.

But the dice that draw the most attention from people when I use them are the round d6's I own. Black with red pips, these dice are perfectly round and have a ball bearing (best guess) that sits in a divit inside the die when it finishes rolling.

They admittedly are hard to read which is why I don't use them much. The casino dice are so much better. Have to get another set of them to replace the set of four from the old Aladdin casino that have their corners chipping away due to age (they're older than I am and I bought them for a buck at a flea market).

The black with red pips are no longer available, but you can see a picture of the dice at the DEI Games website.

Hey Mr. Duckfinder,

I have a pristine pair of the "official" Traveller dice (black with white starburst and red number). I just recently got them from Loren Wiseman and haven't even had a game to use them in. If you _really_ want a pair, drop me a note offline and we can discuss it.

Something else, Chessex CNX 25708 is the Space Dice Block. 12 16mm black dice, speckled with white spots and having red pips. Those are quite cool too.

thanks especially to william for your kind offer .
thanks everyone . i bought some of the official sunburst dice off m.w.m. on ebay recently . they appeared magically two days after this thread started . i noticed some more came on after those too , so i guess he has a few . they are very nice dice with a good weight to them and i am now a happy traveller .
i would like to get some black dice with red pips ( not digits ) though , i am still trying to find some of these that can be shipped to the uk .

I found them (a while ago) with a search for "traveller rpg" to avoid most of the non-game related travel stuff. Marc W Miller goes by onlooker1 on eBay so you could do a search by seller if you want to see what he has to offer. I made a couple bids on the dice he had but lost out, and when I found out Loren was selling some over on JTAS I put in a request. He said he thought he had some more in storage but never got back to me so I guess either he didn't or he lost my contact.
