Traveller-esque Computer Games

On a Mac.... I'm surprised you have not yet mentioned Escape Velocity or EV Nova. Ambrosia Software makes some of the best games on the Mac, and they have been doing it since the Mac was born in the mid-80s.

In fact, Ambrosia made some of the DAMN BEST GAMES on the Mac, that thousands of PC gamers petitioned and demanded that they port their games to Windows. They said NO for years, and then finally they caved in and started porting their games to Windows (when they realized that they'd make more money with the PC customers).

Escape Velocity and EV Nova are sorta-Traveller-ish games. There is trade, exploration, and plenty of arcade-like spaceship combat. Oh, and you can choose piracy too, so that's always lovely.

I'm surprised nobody has yet to EVE Online... www.eve-online.com. Pretty great game; I did a bit of everything, made a lot of money finding and running trade routes. Some of those runs were pretty tense, going through low security systems and spotting hostiles nearby.

Maladominus: I'm glad to hear Nova mentioned :) I was the lead engineer on the conversion of Nova from the Mac to the PC.

Starship Tycoon.

It is a trading in space game. Has some interesting aspects like Traveller.

But the travel between planets is not at all like Traveller.

Also very editable to make your own maps and objectives.

Yeah EV Nova is great! Was one of the designers a Mancunian, by any chance, as there were alot of planet names from my neck of the woods?

Btw, it seemed to bug on me, at the end of, oh I can't remember the name, but I was lead space warrior for some super space warriors in a war, and was sent on some mission out all over the place. I thought I'd visited every place I needed to but the story wouldn't advance. :(

Escape Velocity and EV Nova has travel similar to Traveller.

It uses FTL jumps (or warp jumps, like in Star Wars) between star systems. And once you reach in-system, your maneuver thrusters take over as you approach planets, bases and moons, etc.

Just like all versions of Elite do

</font>[/QUOTE]I don't know, I just did the engineering work to convert the core engine (only touched the data as necessary). After the initial release, I believe I worked on one patch, and then never worked on it again; anything after that was up to Ambrosia.

Hidden Agenda, while being a real-world-based simulation, has a certain CT (or even TNE) flavor to it - realistic politics, realistic economies, and several large governments trying to meddle in an impoverished nation which has just overthrown a dictator. A good source for Mercenary/Striker scenarios, too...

I picked up Advent Rising the other day. Pretty cool game. I mean, it won't win Game of the Year, or anything like that, but it is tell ing a good, space-opera story (a better story than is typical in a computer game ... Orson Scott Card co-wrote the game's script).

Graphics are pretty cool. Aliens look neat. Interesting cut-scenes that push the story forward.

This is a third-person twitch game, with hoards of alien invaders and weapons that hold an impossible amount of ammo. It is definitely more space opera than hard science fiction.

But, so far, it's pretty doggone fun (if you don't take the game too seriously), especially the mad-dash across a planet I just made in a souped-up dune-buggy.

Think dead-head Hollywood sci-fi action flick with a better-than-average story. I haven't finished the game yet, but I'd recommend it just on what I have played. If you're in the mood for "fun", you might like the game. If you're in a "serious" mood, I'd probably skip it.

It's less serious than Knights of the Old Republic, and parts of it are arcade-ey, but it's also not a bad space opera game for just over $20 bucks.

I recommend it.
