Type-H Freighter

The folding wings are a good idea - hadn't thought of that!

And yes, I do intend to get rid of the engine pods, because I don't want it to be too similar...

It's just a sad fact of the way the B2 Drive Potential Table is laid out that a 300-dton hull will end up having a cost profile closer to that of a 400-dtonner and a revenue profile closer to that of a 200-dtonner.

That said, it's still an interesting design. Obviously better suited for trade and speculation than freight and passengers, it's a pretty good template for a big-boned-not-fat yacht, too -- ample staterooms for a modest entourage and enough hold for a good assortment of vehicles and recreational equipment... without an excess of cargo space which might tempt a pragmatic noble owner to something as vulgar as mere commerce...

Well here's my take on making the numbers fit. Jame may have come to his numbers honestly but I couldn't make them work :( Consider it an alternative version, especially since I had to break the strict B2 rules and interpolate the drives...

Valkyrie class type L Patrol Corvette - CTB2 design by Journeyman Design Bureau LIC

The Valkyrie class was a budgetary attempt at filling the role of the more expensive type T Patrol Cruiser for a subsector deemed marginal and of little value. In this role it proved acceptable but once the subsector grew and the budget crunch was past the class was decommissioned and sold. Most of these ships are still in service in the subsector and surrounds as far-traders.

The ship is quite reliable with proper servicing but it's design features can be problematic if maintenance is spotty. While the drives perform well even with unrefined fuel the nature of the nacelle design has caused grief when the wing articulation begins to wear and fail.

(more colour text may be added)

The example below is of one such conversion in service as a far-trader. The costs listed are 50% of the new value reflecting it's 40 years of prior service, which is what the second mortgage is calculated at. Annual maintenance is of course calculated at full new cost.

It retains the naval drives and avionics, which are a major boon to frontier merchants. This example has retained the chin turret and installed a used pulse laser and sand caster. The port and starboard turrets are empty, and usually put to good use as storage lockers.

The required crew is the same as in service, Pilot, Navigator, Engineer, and Medic. In service it would also have Gunners, and Marines, in the rest of the quarters and various small craft and/or vehicles in the cargo holds. The low berths now used for poor travellers would have been used for medical emergencies, frozen watches, or prisoner transport in service. As a merchant ship and without a Steward the extra staterooms are limited to Middle Passage bookings, and to be honest the quarters are not quite up to the level of comfort that one would see in a regular High Passage stateroom. Not that they are bad, just well worn from the many years of use and austere by design.

The ship's computer program loadout is:

Maneuver, Generate, Navigate, Jump 1+2, Anti-Hijack, Library, Target, and Launch. This fills the model/2 computers banks. The Jump 1+2 program is a hybrid, combining a Jump 1 program and a Jump 2 program into 2 bank slots at a cost (new) of MCr0.5.

Let me know how this suits you Jame. And of course everyone is welcome to pick it apart for errors.

I think it'll make it's payments with a full load of freight and middle passagengers, with fuel skimmed or bought unrefined. Of course in MTU a 40 year old ship is going to have a few quirks to balance off it's low cost
This one should definately have some especially given it's naval drives and avionics. The extra sensor range and ability to safely run on unrefined fuel is very valuable.

Hmm. Naval auxiliary isn't what I had in mind, but it's not a bad explanation (just not what I'd pictured). But what happened to the port and starboard turrets? Where they taken out? And why?

IMTU I generally allow Book 2 ships to have fuel processors built into the design (and factor this in to all my designs) as a tiny part of the drive tonnage and cost, so you might want to keep that in mind.

That, I figure, is really a matter between you and your shipyard.

If I were going to produce a drive potential table row for 300 ton hulls under Book 2, I'd be looking at:

A -
B 1
C 2
D 2
E 3
F 4
G 4
H 5
I 6
J 6
K -
L -

Under this setup, the punishment potential of D-class drives makes them attractive for the original Patroller version of the Valk, but an expensive luxury for a merchant.

If we look at the class as being "defined" as older hulls, as Far-Trader is suggesting, then some fairly mild cargo speculation will keep the ship in the black, as it needs to maintain somewhat less than Cr 2000 per cargo ton profits. Make friends with the right brokers and pick your route carefully, and this can be done pretty trivially...

Hey all, I got busier than I thought I would this weekend, but not on the deckplans :(

I managed to throw together the upper deck quick and dirty but no time to put it in a nice format or place. Best I can manage on my short time is a crappy print to pdf dropped in the files over on the yahoo CT-Starships group.

You need to be signed up I think to get it from there, so if you aren't you'll have to wait a bit. Go here:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ct-starships/

It's in my Journeyman Design Bureau folder in the files section, it's only temporary though and the only thing in there at the moment.

No key yet but a quick rundown of what you see from the bow aft...

Dark grey fill black outlines are bulkheads and vacuum doors. Light grey fill black outlines are internal partitions and standard doors. The cross-hatched area is fuel tankage. The rest should be pretty obvious I think.

First is the bridge, big surprise there ;) Seats the crew of 4, usually double tasked but at least Pilot, Navigator, Medic, and Engineer.

Just behind the bridge is the ship's office with a locker, and the computer closet, with a model 2.

Next is the airlock which transects the ship.

Now midships is the crew quarters, the Captain's stateroom is the one with the locker. Past the staterooms is the small crew mess with a hatch leading down to the lower deck.

Through the door is a small closet and fresher opposite and up the small incline (1/2 deck rise) is the crypt housing 20 lowberths. The lowberths are put to different uses depending on mission. It could be prisoners in transit, rescued casualties, or frozen watch personnel. The back wall of the crypt has a hatch leading up to the upper drive nacelle and down to the middle deck.

Behind the bulkhead at the back of the crypt is the upper cargo deck, 25tons rated with a 5ton lift at the forward end to transfer cargo.

The wings and outboard drive nacelles are shown as external features on this layer. The gray zig-zag on the wings is the hinge area.

Feel free to comment here or on CotI or wait until I finish the rest of it and post a better graphic. That print to pdf is just bad, but no time to convert to better right now

Oh great, now I see the post. Scarecrow is gonna come back anytime and his is gonna shine all the prettier for comparing it to my poor offering...

...I can't wait :D

Then perhaps I shouldn't. :D

Seriously though, anything I do is likely to be an attempt at visual kewelness and little more. Far-Trader's deckplans will be better thought out than anything I produce (if indeed I ever do).

Crow (flattered - no, seriously)

Don't stop on Andrew's account; instead, continue on your own account!

Far Trader, I'm glad you have plans, but I'm not joining a Yahoo group for it.

F+T makes a good point about it likely being an ex-military vessel. Perhaps in its Service iteration it has a crew of 7-9, usually 8, and has a unit of marines of about 18-20 (two squads of 8 plus either a leading sergeant or a lieutenant and a commo/forward observer, and possibly section heavy weapons).

Hey it's your cool visuals I love. And you give more than a passing nod to the fictional reality yourself.

I thank you for your own kind words, I do try to think about my deckplans/designs ;) (see next post... )

<sigh> :(

I finally got a few minutes to get back to the nearly complete deckplans for this, polished them up a bit, and was quite happy... until I started into the descriptive bit and noticed I'd left out two staterooms

Two whole staterooms. The tonnage total for the quarters is right, but somewhere I lost two of the staterooms. Comes from having them spread out I guess, just a tally error.

Oh well, there's a perfect spot to drop them in, so it's not really a problem. Except that it was the officer crew mess
file_22.gif
And it was soooo sweet. A nice little perk, a small nook for the crew that flies the thing, seperate from the troops who like to shoot things. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

So anyway, next time I get a few minutes I'll fix that, edit the descriptive and post it up. With luck it'll be sooner than later.
