Favorite version of Traveller: CT (plus homebrew mods)

I haven't played Traveller for more than 20 years, but when I saw the announcement about Mongoose Traveller I was hit by a wave of nostalgia. A little bit of googling later and here I am.

I just ordered the CT CD since I gave away my LBBs years ago. I'm sure I'll be posting some questions as I try to wrap my brain around Traveller again.

Name: Mark
Age: Old Enough to know better (45)
Country: US, Sierra Foothills of CA
Favorite version of Traveller: Classic Traveller
Military Service: None, just built stuff for those who did serve, as a contractor.
Favorite Supplement: Peanut Butter M&Ms
Favorite Sector: The Maui Zowie pieces with the most bacon on them.
Favorite Race: GDW's Triplanetary
Favorite Empire: My own, based on a mix of Doc Smith and Harry Harrison stories, mostly.

I only own the first 3 LBBs (they only have the death rule in them, no alternates--I believe that I was the first in my area to purchase Traveller, or at least the first to get it from my FLGS then), and have only ever used them with my own material. Just ordered the Classic Traveller CD and the JTAS CD, =really= looking forward to receiving them. Interested in RTT, though I got burnt by MRQ. Would really like to see Mongoose supplements for miniatures, particularly one that includes Triplanetary, one of my favorite games of all time.

Seattle!

'Been looking for other Seattle nostalgic-for-Traveller folk. Same thing happened to me several months back. Drop a line my way, can talk of Traveller and who knows, maybe get a game going at some point with other locals we find:-)

Name: Tom
Country: US of A
Favorite version of Traveller: undecided. I played in several Classic Traveller scenarios at cons in baltimore. Also played in one extended campaign that mostly used the Traveller universe with rules based on Classic Traveller (Mega was not yet in print) and at least two other games. That was my favorite campaign.
Military Service: one year of Army ROTC in college (you ought to get a haircut son, it looks like hell). Narrowly missed being drafted upon graduation.
Favorite Supplement: none
Favorite Sector: Spinward Marches, but not very familiar with others
Favorite Race: none
Favorite empire: none

gbooth's location: "Southern New Mexico'

So, Tom... anywhere near Truth or Consequences? Or Roswell?

Sorry, had to ask the common question :p

I have relatives north of Gallup (not N.A.), and my older brother lived in Santa Fe in the mid-1980s.

About 75 miles south of T or C. Have you heard why the town (formerly Hot Springs) is named Truth or Consequences?

Roswell is about 3.5 hours travel time distant. Someone pointed out The Hangar during one of my first trips to Roswell. I have seen some high quality rubber aliens there.

From the official town website of T

C :

In 1950, Hot Springs New Mexico, was plodding along slowly and fairly comfortably, much the same as hundreds of other small resort cities. Tourist trade, practically speaking, was the city's only industry. The majority of visitors here sought the town's health facilities and found the little community offered more for their money than they found almost anywhere else under the sun. The cost of living was, and still is, extremely reasonable, and visitors and residents alike did, and still do, relax in the healing, naturally hot mineral baths, bask in the almost ever present sunshine, fill their lungs with the fresh, pure air that envelops the city and surrounding areas, fish a little, and play dominoes and shuffleboard at the Senior Citizens Recreation Center.

Another pastime years ago was sitting in groups on the sidewalk benches to watch a few travelers as they passed on the highway, usually without stopping. Recreation then was undeveloped to its full potential and the town was lost among hundreds of other " Hot Springs" scattered all over the United States; the name indicating nothing more significant than the likelihood that some hot springs were located in the area.

Then in 1950, NBC television and radio producer Ralph Edwards, on the 10th anniversary of the Truth or Consequences radio program, called his staff together and said, "I wish that some town in the United States liked and respected our show so much that it would like to change its name to 'Truth or Consequences.'" Upon hearing the proposition, the New Mexico State Tourist Bureau relayed the news to the manager of the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce and the news spread like wildfire.

Here was an opportunity to advertise the city and its resources free of charge! Better still, no longer was our city to be confused with that "other one" in Arkansas and the others throughout the nation (California alone has more than 30 towns called "Hot Springs").

So, in a special city election, 1,294 of the town's residents voted for the change to "Truth or Consequences." On the other hand, 295 area residents opposed the change and a protest was filed. So the city returned to the polls and again voted - by a margin greater than four to one to go ahead with the name change.

Almost 14 years later, in January 1964, the question went to the people again and they voted to keep the city's unique name. A fourth election was held on August 18, 1967, and once more a majority voted to keep the name Truth or Consequences.

Ralph Edwards and his entire NBC production, acting and show crew came here in 1950, aired the first live, coast-to-coast broadcast of Truth or Consequences from the city of Truth or Consequences. The residents of his adopted home were very pleased to say he came back every year for 50 years with his Hollywood friend to celebrate the anniversary of the name change. He helped spread the news about this oasis of hot springs, two of the state's best lakes and many other recreational opportunities throughout Sierra County.

Yes, I cheated... as I had a vague recollection it had to do with the game show, but knew nothing of the details.

Some stories have it that payment was provided to the town for the change of name.

I was quite disappointed to learn the source of the name, having naively imagined a more dramatic sort of Old West naming.

Hi all, I am an Englishman in exile in the deepest South of France. I've been role-playing since the days when there was only one D&D book in the world - blue & white cover & all the weapons did 1d6 - and CT was brand new to England. My experience is extensive but no doubt very dated; in recent years I have played a lot of GURPS Traveller and Call of Cthulhu. Because of my isolation, at the moment I'm trying to get to grips with GRIPS.

Welcome, Kropotkin38!

Welcome to the best Traveller board on the net.

Hate to break this to you, but that D&D edition sounds like the 1978 edition, and is the second edition of the D&D game... if it is this one:
http://rpg.drivethrustuff.comwaterm...170&it=1&filters=0_0_1330&manufacturers_id=44

the "Classic" edition in white or brown 5x8" books was available until 1981 or so...

Further, by that time, several other RPG's were in print.

Judging from that resume, you started arount 1981... by which point quite a few RPG's were in print. Most just were not yet shipping to the UK....

Well, thanks for that. I don't mind at all finding out that a few editions pre-dated my introduction to role-playing. Yeah, I think it must have been 1980 that I played for the very first time; I guess that makes me a veteran but not an original!:)
Was the blue cover edition the first one to be shipped to the UK? Ian Livingstone was instrumental in bringing D&D to the UK, I know that much.

I was thinking today, oddly enough whilst slapping earth render on straw bale walls, about how interesting the sociology of role-playing is. Our hobby runs the gamut from the first converted wargamers through my generation of D&D, Traveller, Dragonquest, Runequest players to the younger players nowadays who have actively chosen role-playing in a world full of all kinds of shiny computer geegaws.

I suppose I should drop a "hello note" as well...

I'm 49 and teach history. I've played RPGs starting in 1975 (D&D) and Traveller since 1976. I'm just getting back into Traveller after a number of years (my last campaign was MT, set in an modified and alternate timeline Spinward Marches -- no rebellion). I have bought the material as it was published (CT, MT, TNE -- although I stuck with the MT rules for years after TNE came out, T4, some GT and the dead tree releases of T20) mainly for reading material and to keep up with the game. I've continued to play D&D off and on (3.5 currently -- absolutely no intention of switching to 4E based on what I've read about it) and have no plans to stop playing RPGs. I'm planning on re-starting my Traveller campaign this summer and am going to be looking for advice, ideas and comments as well as just cruising the boards for fun. It feels good to be back listening to traveller fans again!

HI all

Well I hoping this goes to the right place.
Name: Don or Donald, hey you works once in awhile.
Age: To old 45
Military: UASF SP for 15 Years Riff'ed:mad:
Role player since 1975 started with 1st Ed AD&D then Traveller a few others over the years. I have really stayed with the 1st Ed's of most games, picking the good idea's from the new editions, so I guess I play hybrids.
Looking for other gamers in the Northwest Arkansas Area (Fayetteville)

Hello all, I was recently directed here while looking for information on the Aldenata RPG.

I don't actually see any of it here, but this does look like a nice community, so I decided to drop in and see how you all reacted to me.
