Who are we?

What is there to like in Traveller: The New Era?

There are a few nifty ideas in the TNE Line...
Character's Contacts
Chem-lasers
Reasonable fusion fuel rates
integrated design system (Even if it is almost unplayable as presented)
alternate drive technologies
cybernetics

It was a well meaning but badly informed design. GDW was (as Dave N. aka Dreadnought keeps showing over the years) self-assured of the rightness of their path.

And TNE does have a fan-base. It has low overlap with the rest of the Traveller fan-base, but it exists, it's just as rabid as the CT and MT fanbases, and often don't get why we don't like it... Especially MT fans like me, who merely tolerated the design rules in MT.

I am not going to get into a discussion with you, Aramis, on the merits and demerits of TNE.

Our group, a bunch of Trekkies (geeks) started playing blue book D&D in '77, and Traveller as soon as our GM found those 3 black books. Also played in college. Father of two adult children, one of whom is keen on D&D. Data Modeler/programmer which sadly gives me little time to commit to a group (plus a wife and a home needing work, giving me less time). Traveller remains one of my pet programming projects, and the first source of practice material for learning a new programming language. Played EVE Online for a while, and with Dust 514 I think they will be taking that environment closer to what I'd consider the closest to a Taveller environment of any particular game (but not the same as a table-top experience). Would some day love to come up with a virtual table top for Traveller, but can't dedicate enough time to the project.

Most upsetting point in Canon: Assassination of Strephon and family. Dulinor was not even prepared for what he unleashed, how much blood is on his hands? The whole Virus thing was just overkill IMPO.

Too true. I did like the reference on another thread to K'Kree mowing their shipboard grassland with Dulinor-class combine harvesters though :D

I didn't mind the Rebellion as such but I wish there'd been better, more consistent development of the setting and adventures. It all kind of petered out, and I didn't enjoy TNE.

Favorite version of Traveller: Just bought T5, my first Traveller book! C'mon, it looked pretty cool, how could I not.

Military Service: None. Respek though.

Favorite Adventure: Any Recommendations? Or maybe I'll just put down the influences I plan on using IMTU... say for example Fifth-Element, Firefly, Dune, Foundation, H2G2, Known Space, Orion's Arm, Honor Harrington, Culture, Hyperion Cantos... Twilight Imperium, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Elite, Nexus: the Jupiter Incident? Homeworld 2? Want to avoid Trek/Wars kind of feel and go for something... else. Dirtier?

Favorite Sector: Spinward March stories sound like they'd be very cool. Early contact OTU would be good stories.

Favorite Race: I dunno about the official races yet, save that they're pretty Nivenesque. The T5 book random alien maker is pretty cool IMO, made a couple of my buds roll up sophonts and the results are usually pretty hilarious. Nobody wants to play a human.

Favorite Empire: I think the Terran Confederation time period would have some damn fine stories... but I'd probably rather build my own empire?

Started Playing Traveller: TBD!

Most upsetting point in Canon: I have no idea! But I've been reading through the historical write-ups and OTU timeline and from what I've seen I think I'm a little disappointed that in the expanded universe things didn't get a little crazier? Like, after so many thousands of years things shouldn't be so familiar and equivalent to past empires. No nebulous nanotech emergent intelligences that use pulsar radiation neural networks spanning a quarter of the galaxy holding biological sophonts as pets? Or as an immune system? Things could be a little more out there, maybe.

Anyway! Hey all. Pleasure to meet you. :D

Favorite Version: CT/MT, but I'm finding that I'm currently leaning towards MgT after running MTU using the CP2020 rules for years and wanting to get back to a set of Traveller rules.
Military Service: Nope, multiple other careers though - and I married into the military LOL!
Favorite Supplement: SORAG, maybe Aslan Mercenary Class ships (FASA)
Favorite Adventure: Leviathan, Knightfall, or the Mongoose Secret of the Ancients.
Favorite Sector: The Beyond (PP version), maybe Glimmerdrift (JG version)
Favorite Race: Home-brewed, metahuman "Exotics"

Started Playing Traveller: 1979-80ish
Most Upsetting Canon: The Virus (what a waste of the Cyms), with the Rebellion as a close second. I'm not bothered by Stephon being assassinated, but I would have enjoyed seeing a "rough transition of power" rather than the breakdown of all of Known Space.
