Why core-ward?

spank

SOC-12
Today I had a stray thought,
Why are the Zhodani sending expeditions to the the Core?
Why not the Rim?
Why not Spinward, or Trailing?

Also, there are no known potential territorial rivals to Coreward (or at least none that the Zhodani have been willing to tell the other powers of Charted Space about.)

Even without the psionic device, Spinward is their only other option for long-range expedition: Trailing takes them right across the Vargr Extants, while Rimward takes them through a region where they have active proxy rivalries with the Imperium, and then into the Aslan Hierate.

True now, but that was not the case when the Core Expeditions initially started. The First Expedition was set up in IY -4006, only a few decades after the end of the Consolidation Wars. The Zhodani were aware of the Vilani (though not the other way around), but they also knew that the nearest outpost of the nascent Ziru Sirka was at least two sectors to trailing of them, and that there was nothing else of any note found in Charted Space at the time, and definitely not anything to rimward. Not even the Sky Raiders, who did not come up on Consulate radar until the late -3900s.

The CT Zhodani Alien Module does mention early expeditions up and down the Orion Arm, as well as out to the rim. These must have occurred between IY -5500 and IY -4000.

Everyone's always wondered what's at the center?
First, the center of the Earth...
Eventually, the center of the galaxy.

Of course, the writers said they got a psionic device from GF....

But, in the end, it's always the "center of"...

Trailing, they have the Vargr extents.
Rimward, they have the Aslan Hierate.
North and South don't happen with J-space...
Spinward, we don't have good data...

The Core is inherently more interesting, as the astrographics are going to be revealing more and more.... because it's where the visual density is the highest and thus more can be hidden.

Fair. The Zhodani don't encounter the Vargr before -2800 or the Vilani until -2000. At least not officially!
