Best TV SF for Traveller

the theme song was so cool...

i SOOOOOOO much wanted the action figures and space ship toy when i was a boy..
my friend had it and i insisted on playing with it everytime i went over there so
much he stopped inviting me over... :( hehe

Well, you got your revenge when you learnt how to play Traveller and told him there is no way an Eagle with that much much mass could possibly make the Delta V maneuver he was attempting.

Yes, those toys were ultra cool...I had the Eagle but wanted the Moonbase. As for figures, I would routinely substitute my Star Wars figures for the Space 1999 ones and they would go on adventures. Mostly blowing up stuff real good.

Second season? What second season? Nya nya nya I can't hear you ... :p

What? Oh, in that case: Black Sheep Squadron! Das Boot! The Prisoner! :cool:

I *wish* I had played Trav like Das Boot.

More likely it was "Wild Geese," "Dogs of War" and "Hunt for Red October."

I can beleive noone has said anything about

Wild Wild West
McHale's Navy
Alias Smith and Jones
Q.E.D
Bearcats!
The Avengers
Laredo

The show doesn't have to be sci-fi to be able to influence Trav, after all.

While I agree it does not have to be SciFi to have an impact on my Traveller game, the thread asked about SciFi TV. Also, not to be too disagreeable, but not all those shows had an influence on my games Traveller or not.

Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, Lost in Space-the original pilot episode & the early TV episodes(before it became the 'Dr. Smith Comedy Hour'), Farscape.

Actually, the thread asked, "What other TV shows are reflected in your Traveller Universe?" It didn't really specify sci-fi, and there are so few good sci-fi shows that others influenced my games more. These shows did influence my game alot. Besides, I was certain that others would list pretty much all the sci-fi shows in recent memory anyways. I wanted to be different.

oh yeah...

"Tales of the Gold Monkey"

Ah, yes, non-sci-fi TV...

All in the Family - Archie is the model for my Solomani Party hardliners.

Marcus Welby, MD and Quincy: strong mystery impact.

Hawaii 5-O & Hill Street Blues: over the top Law enforcement. Hi5O's lead is the typical model for my local startown police... arrogant, smug, and usually also highly effective. HSB, well, showing good, day to day, police operations at TL (early) 7.

I've run a short campaign based upon Hogan's Heroes. Players couldn't keep up.

Traveller based on Hogan's Heroes? That is one of my all time favorite shows. I have it on DVD and watch it several times a year.

How in the world did you pull that off?

Just to be clear.

Title of the thread: Best TV SF for Traveller
Examples given by original poster?: All SF as well.
So the question asked in context was based on SF.

But that is not the real issue is it? People just love listing TV shows and thus should have fun doing so.

Start with Adventure 8 - Prison Planet

Move the planetoid to a solomani asteroid belt with a decent population.

German = Solomani
American = Imperial
British = Imperialized Aslan
French = Vegan
Jew = Vilani (not that it comes up much)

Now, focus on the heroes sneaking others out into the belt to escape in makeshift vac suits, and interacting with sympathetic enlisted guards and nutcase officers.

Oh, and set it during the Solomani Rim War ca 995....

Just to be clear.

Gee...I just answered the question asked, exactly as quoted....
This sort of list has been done over the years tonnes of times and gets the same answers, pretty much.
I just wanted to demonstrate that just because Trav is sci-fi, the influences don't have to be. After all, great stories can be found everywhere.

( Q.E.D. , Avengers, and Max Headroom could be considered sci-fi :-> )

But that is not the real issue is it? People just love listing TV shows and thus should have fun doing so.

It never was an issue with me.....and I did have fun,
so, yes, I do agree with that.

Yep I agree. It was as it was set in the "future".

As for non-SciFi TV shows that had anything to do with the games I ran:

  • Miami Vice had some great smuggler plots to borrow from.
  • The Rat Patrol had some nice "small group" (read RPG Party) plots.
  • A Man Called Sloane gave me a plot idea that was a hit with the group.
  • Simon & Simon offered some interesting ideas.
  • Magnum, p.i. was a nice source for various plot ideas.
  • The Hitchhiker various plot ideas and some characters as well.
  • Tales from the Darkside offered various character situations.
  • Night Court gave me one of my key NPCs.

I will stop there for now.

Hey, nobody's mentioned Buck Rogers in the 25th Century yet! The Gil Gerard version. That's how people dress IMTU. ;)

:rofl:

Some parts were edible, but for the most part I used that to describe Palladium's Phase World space setting. Over-the-top and all sorts of weird and goofy powers. Another good one for Palladium was He-Man & Masters of the Universe with Dolph Lundgren and was pretty close to their Rifts (and by proxy Phase World) setting.

Firefly has some great elements. Too bad it died. I thought the series was better than the movie.

Another good Space Western is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1m44VNw3O0

As I have not had cable for several years, and never watched the Sci-Fi channel when I did (heresy, but the various History/Discovery channels had my attention for research purposes), I have never seen an episode of Firefly.

I recently picked up a discount copy of Serenity... so I will soon have an idea what all of you have been talking about (and what Emerald Rose is singing about on their Con Suite CD).

Vulcan Rubdowns... yum!!!

And remember... "Never split the party, and don't let that darned thief out of sight"

Did Firefly ever make it to Sci-Fi?

When it was aired it was either UPN or Fox. It was in a really bad timeslot on Friday night. Would have done much better on another night of the week I think. It was frequently pre-emptied. The only reason I saw it was I heard it advertised on the radio and set up my DVR to record it.

I think that only nine of the thirteen episodes were originally aired before it was canceled. You can get the entire series on DVD.

Well just made sure someone mentioned Cowboy Bebop, phew! They are TL 9 - 11 bounty hunters just making their way through the universe. I usually like my SciFi more epic, but the characters and show were so slick, I forgot to care. I recommend the whole series on DVD, the one that includes the movie too.

It also has the best theme song ever:
