Here's what I used in my Elestrial Concordat MGT game:

Left side is officers, right is enlisted
Top to bottom: Navy, Marine, Patrol, Scouts
Rank is shown for officers with cuff stripes and shoulder boards, for enlisted with sleeve chevrons and rockers.
Note: rank 0-1 scouts wear officer uniform without boards, Senior Scouts wear boards with Rank 1 stripe.

Officers and all scouts have narrow lapels, enlisted don't. Officers and senior scouts have shoulder boards, scouts don't..

TAS Digest Article

It looks like this thread died a while ago... and I apologize if this was already mentioned: There was a TAS Digest article that went into some detail about Imperial uniforms. It was called, "Uniforms of the Terran Occupation Force." It described in great detail a uniform that looks a lot like the New BSG uniform.

They even went into details about rank insignia... and I use those particular details when I describe uniforms to my own game party. Apparently one of the many Emperors got tired of having to memorize four different insignia systems so he issued a decree that all Imperial forces adopt a standardized system that can be identified immediately.

Officers.

O-1 through O-3 use 1 to 3 silver sunburst pins (or "pips")
O-4 through O-6 use 1 to 3 gold sunburst pins
O-7 through O-10 use 1 to 4 four-pointed stars.

Enlisted. (This one I changed a bit so that each rank has its own emblem, but the original idea went like this.)

On a square patch on the upper arm, disc shaped pips are arranged in such a way that they ultimately form a cross shape called the "Warrior's Cross."

E-2 had 1 disc on the left side of the patch
E-3 had 2 disc on each side (the arms of the cross)
E-4 through E-6 add a disc at the top of the patch (making a triangular formation of discs)
E-7 through E-9 added a fourth disc for the foot of the cross.

So, basically the system grouped people into categories like Recruit, Experienced Grunt, Fire Team Leader, Junior NCO, and Senior NCO.

I modify the system so that E-1 has no pin and E-2 through E-5 make a cross in sliver and E-6 through E-9 make a cross in gold.

Anyway, I can pull out that old digest and read/post more if anyone really cares.

Yes please!!!

It does ring a bell, maybe it was mentioned on the thread ...

Well, it seems to be a mixture of things. I re-read the article and, actually, it appears that they're talking about Imperial Marine uniforms. Still, a good place to start, IMO... especially the bit about the unified rank insignia system (called JIS... Joint Imperial Service system). I'll see if I can scan the article and post the pictures. There are nice ones of enlisted full dress and combat fatigues.

The article also notes that enlisted insignia are often variant, but officers have to wear JIS, potentially in addition to variant insignia.

Very nice. And then one could have one, two, and three extra big star(burst)s for O11, O12, and O13. :D

(Don't hit! Don't hit! I'll be good!! ;))

Naw, just 8-pointed gold stars, and solid gold epaulettes.

Would they really have the V-motif for the petty officers? It just seems so ... "Terran".

Yes, they would. But only for some units.

The 3I has some units dating back before the 3I... and the chevron (point up or down) is one of the most common rank insignia in human rank systems. It's at least as common as cuff-ring stripes.

And chevrons are mentioned in TD 14... as the most common option... but the system isn't given.

Also, in The Traveller Adventure, we see an illo of a starport clerk wearing a chevron on the collar.

Interesting. I thought maybe an oval or a triangle motif. Something unique and different that could be simple but also say "hey, this is an alien ranking system", and at the same time be understandable and somewhat familiar in theme.

Just my creative side at work here :)

Hi Matt, I hope you can scan it. I'm writing a guide tio uniforms at the moment, it would be really really helpful!!!

Hi Aramis! I love the designs you came up with. I think I'll switch to that one for enlisted soldiers. Mithras, I'm trying to scan the pictures as we speak, but I seem to be having trouble with that darned HP PhotoSmart program. Leave it to me to want to do anything sophisticated with a printer... like use one of its built in functions!

Anyway, I hope to have it done soon. As I said, the Enlisted dress uniform (at least for Marines) is a red version of the new BSG uniform but with unit patches on the shoulder and the Warrior's Cross insignia on the sleeves in pretty much the same position that most armies of today place them. The really maddening thing about the pictures is that they show the rank patches with circles at the corners rather than in the cross shape. The artist must not have read the article very carefully! Maybe someone with more computer drawing skills can "fix" these scans and show us how the emblems should REALLY look. (I'm a pro musician... so I could write some background tunes to play along with the pictures! :) )

Thanks alot Matt! That really gives me something to work with/a headache to fit in, so I'll look forward to tying those pictures in to other bits of 'evidence'. Before you go, could you just tell me exactly what the TD says the uniforms are? And also the date of the magazine as well please??? Thanks again, I have HP Photosmart, my latest version is a bit kooky.
